  3. PHOBOS features • Almost 4š coverage for charged particle multiplicity on event-by-event basis • Si spectrometer allows coverage to low pt at mid-rapidity • “High” data rate: ~200 events/sec • Almost all one technology: Si pads

  5. Magnet • Fabricated by Danfysik, Denmark • Tested at AGS • Now installed in RHIC tunnel

  6. Module gluing station • Detector assembly rigs handcrafted by Krakow engineers • Detector modules now in production • About 1/3 of one spectrometer arm complete (MIT) • About 1/2 of octagon assembly complete (UIC,ANL) • All modules to be complete by June 30

  8. Time-of-flight modules • NSF has funded construction of two panels at University of Rochester • Krakow machined light guides and designed and machined support structure Module consists of 4 scintillators and 2 R5900 Hammamatsu PMT’s

  9. Si spectrometer modules • Eight different types, with 5 different sensor types • 131 sensors in 27 modules (1 arm) plus spares • One arm finished by Fall 1999 due to funding limit

  10. Si detector module assembly • Hybrids designed at MIT and fabricated and assembled commercially • Module assembly at MIT (Spectrometer) and UIC (Multiplicity)

  12. Si sensors • Designed at National Central University, Taiwan, and fabricated in ERSO foundry (Taiwan) under their supervision

  13. Trigger counters • Designed by Univ. of Maryland and fabricated by Bicron
