  1. Draw a picture of a wave. Label any parts you know • Name specific waves with which you are familiar 3) Describe the source of one of the waves you named 4) What does it mean when we say that waves transfer energy?

  2. WAVES AND ENERGY

  3. Medium • Substance or material that carries the wave • Sound? • Ocean? • Slinky? • Stadium?

  4. Stadium Wave

  5. Crest = top of wave Trough = bottom of wave

  6. Wavelength • The distance between two corresponding points on consecutive waves • Usually crest to crest

  7. Wavelength

  8. Amplitude • Amount of particle displacement • Usually from rest to crest

  9. Amplitude

  10. Frequency • The amount of waves that pass by during a certain period

  11. As frequency increases … • Wavelength decreases • Energy increases

  12. Two main types of waves 1) Transverse 2) Longitudinal (compression)

  13. Transverse Waves • Wave moves left to right • Particles (disturbance) move up and down • Perpendicular ( 90 degrees)

  14. Transverse Wave

  15. Longitudinal Waves • Wave travels left to right • Particles (disturbance) move left to right • Parallel

  16. Longitudinal waves

  17. Energy moves through waves – not particles • Particles return to their starting (resting) position

  18. Particle Movement

  19. Water waves • Beaches are not flooded!

  20. Any overall movement?

  21. What’s happening to the dog? Any energy transfer?

  22. Breaking the sound barrier

  23. Breaking glass with sound

  24. Tacoma Narrows Bridge
