  2. Family • His father, Hiram Dempsey, was of Irish, Cherokee, and distant Jewish ancestry and his mother, Mary Celia was of Irish and Cherokee descent. Both parents became Mormon and later jack pronounced he was morman. • Because his father had difficulty finding work, the family traveled often.

  3. Jobs • Digging ditches, picking peaches, cutting timber, professional boxer and being a circus roustabout were among his jobs early in his career while traveling from town to town. After retirement, he worked occasionally as a referee and was owner of Jack Dempsey’s Broadway Restaurant from 1935 until 1974 on the site the old car barn across from Madison Square Garden. Dempsey was also a commander in the U.S. Coast Guard.

  4. Struggles in Jacks Life • Dempsey left home at the age of 16 eager to start a better life for himself. Due to lack of money he frequently had to travel underneath trains and sleep in hobo camps. • He dropped out of grade school to work. That’s when he discovered boxing and his brother as a trainer. But in 1967 his brother shot his wife and then took his own life.

  5. Boxing Career • Dempsey's exact boxing record is not known. In his career • During the early part of his career Jack had 6 straight knockouts but lost his first fight due to DQ in the 4th round. Following that loss he had another knockout and two draws. Ten wins in a row followed, a streak during which he beat Sudenberg and was finally able to avenge his defeat at the hands of Downey, knocking him out in two rounds.
