  1. Agenda(from Rebaselining Review) • Introduction (Kotcher – 10’) • Trigger & DAQ/Online (Wood – 30’) • AFE II/TriP (Bross – 15’) • BREAK • Silicon Layer 0 (Lipton – 30’) • Baseline Change Proposal, Rebaseline Summary (Kotcher – 30’) Rebaselining Review of the Run IIb DZeroDetector Project November 5, 2003Fermilab Most everything you will see today is in draft form

  2. AFE II/TriP UpgradeWBS 1.2.8 • We are proposing an upgrade to the Central Fiber Tracker (CFT) readout & triggering system • Maintain tracking capability in light of cancellation of silicon upgrade, particularly at increased luminosity • considerably improved noise performance – lower thresholds, enhance triggering, efficiency • z-information from timing • New Analog Front-End Boards (AFE II) and trigger (TriP) chip • First version TriP chip submitted with SVX4 • Designed, tested by Fermilab (PPD, Yarema) • Was major success out of the box • First full AFE II prototype being laid out now, expect back by end CY03 • System represents major simplification, performance upgrade • Exploiting considerable in-house experience – personnel, depth of technical knowledge • TPC = $2.2M (includes 50% total contingency) • M&S cost estimate based on detailed past experience • see talk by Bross

  4. AFE II/TriP Decision Process • Project funding request ($2.2M) includes both salaries and M&S for production only; does not contain either salaries or M&S for R&D • Has been coming from operating funds (e.g., TriP work & testing) • Agreement with Laboratory that this will continue • Before fully supporting the pursuit of this sub-project, we first must convince ourselves that it will provide the experiment with sufficient gains to justify the considerable effort & potential interruptions to data-taking, and that the scheme will work as advertised • Given the time scales (summer ’05 completion), answering these questions must be given sufficient priority during the next few months…and without allowing operations to falter

  5. AFE II/TriP Decision Process • The following must be completed before production funds will be released: • Continuation/completion of simulations • TriP resubmission • Abder is starting • AFE II prototype layout, fabrication & testing • Arrangements to free John A. up to pursue this for next few months being finalized now • Operations will be covered • Fabrication and testing must immediately follow • DZero Internal Review, followed by a • Laboratory Review, if warranted

  6. AFE II/TriP Decision Process • The DZero Review will be a critical one • Among the things they will be asked to look over: • Technical gains & feasibility • Physics benefits • Realism of schedule • Long-term commitment of personnel • Credibility of installation and commissioning plan, and its impact on acquisition of physics quality data • A major consideration • Will be asked to provide an overall recommendation, submitted to Spokes, PM • If justification is there, and the DZero Internal Review Committee recommends moving forward, would like to hold the Laboratory Review no later than April ’04 • Targeting summer ’05 completion (installation during summer shutdown), which is still tight
