  1. AIDS in Africa Timeline 1960’s scientists believe by the late 60’s there were 2,000 people living in Africa infected with the disease. Early 1990’s Spread of AIDS skyrockets. Number of people infected reaches the millions. AIDS continues to be the number one cause of death in sub saharan Africa.. 1999 The president of Kenya declared AIDS a national disaster. 1982 First recorded case of AIDS in South Africa. AIDS epidemic begins in Eastern Africa. 1985 First AIDS related death in South Africa. U.S. drug companies start producing and distributing AIDS medication in Africa. 1970’s It is believed the first AIDS epidemic took place in Kinshasa, the capital of Congo. High ratios of men to women and low status of women cause AIDS to spread rapidly. 1993 Of the 14 million people infected worldwide, 9 million were located in Africa. 2007 1.6 million people died of AIDS in 2007 2003 to 2005 The number of people being treated for AIDS increased from 100,000 to 800,000.
