The Nasty Railroads What did the railroads do to anger the Grangers (farmers)? • Misuse of land grants (government funds) • Sold land to businesses and not settlers • Fixed shipping prices • Charged different customers different rates • Different prices for short and long hauls • Short haul (railroad monopoly of region)

Government Attempts at Regulating Business Granger Laws Farmers attempted to combat the power of the RRs in late 19th century Misuse of government funds, RRs agreed with each other to fix prices, and keep farmers in debt Raised money to get politicians elected to pass laws for them! Munn vs. Illinois 1877 Supreme Court case Regulate private industry for public interest Supreme Court upheldright of government regulation of RRs for the benefit of farmers Grangersset up funds to help farmers sue for violation of Granger Laws Interstate Commerce Act!!
