  1. 11thJanuary What is CAO? How do I apply? CAO Applications

  2. Purpose of the CAO CAO stands for Central Applications Office and ensures all applications are fair. Offers are issued and acceptances are recorded by CAO. Anyone applying to college must do so through the CAO system.

  3. Information on courses is available from each college and prospectuses should be consulted before making an application. An application can be made on paper or online at www.cao.ie The Application Process

  4. In order to be fair to all applicants, closing dates are strict and therefore action should be taken in good time. Do not leave everything to the last minute. Online closing date for reduction of fee: 20th Jan Closing Date! 1st February

  5. Choosing Courses • Discuss your options with your teachers, family and friends • Details about courses may be found in college prospectuses and by consulting college websites. • Make sure to check course content to see if you would like it.

  6. Making an application • Applicants are encouraged to apply online. • The website address is www.cao.ie • Applying online is cheaper and it prevents many of the mistakes made with completing a paper application form. Extra discount if you apply by 20th Jan (€30).

  7. Application Form: Part A • Part A of the Application Form is mostly self explanatory. • Information which identifies you is very important e.g. date of birth. • Carefully enter details such as your name, address, date of birth, schools attended etc.

  8. Two Applications on One Form • There are two course choice lists and applicants may make up to ten course choices on each list. • 10 choices may be made on the Level 8 list • 10 choices may be made on the Level 7/6 list • They may be considered two separate applications on one form.

  9. Important to Remember • It is possible to receive an offer on both lists • You may then decide to accept either your Level 7/6 or your Level 8 offer. • Alternatively, you might not wish to accept either offer.

  10. Order of Preference • If you learn nothing else remember this… • Place your course choices in genuine order of preference! • Put the course you want to do most first, regardless of points. • To do otherwise is a mistake.

  11. Application Form: Part B • Most applicants will not be required to complete Part B of the application form. • For example, if you are a first-time Leaving Certificate candidate under the age of 23, you will not be required to complete Part B of the form.

  12. Your Application Number • If you apply online your application number will appear on your Receipt of Online Application. • This number is private and it will be used in every correspondence between you and the CAO for the rest of the year. • If you apply online you may change your course choices free of charge until January 31st. • Make sure to make note of your application number.

  13. Statement of Course Choices • If you submit a Paper application form by 1st February, you will receive a Statement of Course Choices by 15th February at the latest. • Carefully read the instructions provided with the Statement

  14. Statement of Application Record. • Check the following carefully, if there is any error or omission, amend the Statement and return it to CAO. • Are all the courses shown and in the correct order? • Are all the codes correct? • Are the exam numbers correct? • Are all exams mentioned? • If you do not receive a Statement by 1st June contact CAO immediately.

  15. The Offer Process • In the week following the release of the Leaving Certificate results (23rd August) CAO will post a communication to all applicants. If you are entitled to an offer, you will be sent an offer notice. You should check that all of the details on the offer notice are correct. • Offers will also be made on the CAO website. • You may check for and accept offers on the website. In fact, most applicants now record acceptances online.

  16. Change of Mind • You can change your mind and add new courses as many times as you like between the 3rd May and 1st July, once you have initially applied. • The change of mind form gives you a chance to completely change your choice as much as you wish after the Leaving Cert examinations.

  17. The Offer Process • Your offer notice may contain an offer • for a Level 8 course • or a Level 7/6 course • or both • If you receive two offers at the same time you may only accept one of them. • If you wish to accept an offer of a place you must carry out the instructions on the offer notice before 5.15pm on the closing date for acceptance printed on the offer notice.

  18. Genuine Order of Preference • You do not need to guess what the points are going to be for the courses you are interested in. • Simply list your courses in genuine order of preference from the highest preference 1, to the lowest preference 10. • If you are entitled to an offer, you will be offered the highest preference that you are entitled to.

  19. Remember • Remember to carefully read all of the documents and instructions from CAO. • Fill in your form in order of genuine preference • Useful websites to help you arewww.cao.ie www.studentfinance.iewww.meathvec.ie www.accesscollege.ie
