What to do before Scholarships • Take the ACT and/or SAT – no later than October of your senior year • Apply to college – the fall of your senior year • Check college application deadlines – some are as early as October 15 • If you qualify for ACT fee waivers, you qualify for college application fee waivers (up to 4) • Make sure your community service hours are documented

What to do before Scholarships (continued) • Senior essay (personal statement) – instructions are on the school share drive in a “Class of 2014” folder – the instructions are also posted outside Ms. Moss’ office • Resume – any format can be used as long as it is written for scholarships, not a job • Education • Work Experience • Awards or Achievements • School Activities • Community Service

  4. . . . continued • Three letters of recommendation • English, math, or science teacher: addresses ability in the classroom and the potential for success in college • Specialty area (coach, club sponsor, or elective teacher): addresses contribution to the specific area and about the student’s character • Community member: addresses mainly the student’s character and also contributions made to the community • A fourth letter is good to have in case you need it and it needs to be from a second teacher

  5. Finally ready for Scholarships • Do the Research – District Website is the best source • Click “students” • Below the bulletin board, click “scholarships” • Click on the “money” • There are other national scholarship websites but you are competing against the best nationally

  6. Other Scholarships • School share drive • “Class of 2014” folder • Most scholarships must be done online • Others can be mailed on your own • Some must go through Ms. Moss because they go to the Scholarship Committee here are IHS

  7. Final Scholarship Thoughts: • Do the research • Check the criteria • 3.0 GPA is the magic number for many scholarships but there are some for everyone • Make sure to meet the deadlines • Do not wait until the last minute to research or to apply
