Modern Periodic Table English chemist H.G.J Moseley developed the concept of atomic number and contributed to Mendeleev’s periodic table by arranging the elements by the atomic number and not the atomic mass. When the elements are arranged in increasing order of atomic number, the discrepancies in Mendeleev’s table disappeared.

Each element is abbreviated with one or two symbols. The 1st letter is capitalized and the 2nd is not. Each symbol represents the English name, old name, or Latin name of the element.
