  2. Asperger’s Syndrome PROGRAM

  3. Corrective Chiropractic Neurology and Functional Nutrition Center Providers of Exceptional Care Joseph Childs, DC, DACNB • Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist • Doctor of Chiropractic • Fellowship Trained in Functional Neurology • Fellowship Trained in Childhood Neuro-development Disorders • Trained in Functional Nutrition and Blood Chemistry • Trained in Spinal Decompression & Biomechanics • Exercise Physiologist • Trained in Chiropractic Pediatrics Call 610-518-3370 or click on

  4. Asperger’s Syndrome Similar to Autism but with excellent verbal skills. Often referred to as “little Professor Syndrome” because of high Intellgence and an obsessive fixation on specific topics of knowledge

  5. Asperger’s Syndrome • No clinically significant delay in cognitive development or language development • Problems with communication, repetitive behaviors, social skills and interaction

  6. What Makes Us Different From Every Other Doctor Your Child has Seen?

  7. We Treat Your Child’s Asperger’s Syndrome Metabolically and Neurologically

  8. Getting To The ROOT Cause We Leave No Stone Unturned To Discover The Reason Your Child Is Experiencing… Asperger’s Syndrome!

  9. In the last ten years, the number of children in special education classes in the United States jumped 46.9 percent. • The methods that doctors, psychologists and behavior specialist use to diagnose and treat theses conditions have not changed in fifty years. Call 610-518-3370 or click on

  10. Einstein once said the definition of insanityis doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Call 610-518-3370 or click

  11. Functional vs. Traditional Diagnosis • Functional • Looks at areas of the child’s brain and nervous system responsible for different functions. Therefore… • Right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex • Right orbitofrontal cortex • Left dentate nucleus of cerebellum

  12. THE FUNCTIONAL DISCONNECTION SYNDROME A Functional Disconnection to Syndrome, meaning areas in the brain, especially the two hemispheres of the brain, are not electrically balanced or synchronized. Call 610-518-3370 or click

  13. THE FUNCTIONAL DISCONNECTION SYNDROME These disorders (ADHD, Asperger's etc.) may manifest with different symptoms but they are really one of the same problem: a brain imbalance. Usually a RIGHT Brain Delay . Call 610-518-3370 or click

  14. Functional Disconnection Syndrome • Right Brain Deficiencies • ADD • ADHD • Asperger’s Syndrome • Autism • Tourette Syndrome • OCD • PDD-NOS • Left Brain Deficiencies • Dyslexia • Learning Disabilities

  15. Right Hemisphere The “brake” pedal Withdrawal responses: stop movement, stop thought Controls gross motor: posture, big movements Likes Low Frequency Stimulation The “Where” part of the brain Social learning: how to apply knowledge Non-linear, “creative” Non-verbal communication: face, eyes, body Stimulated by novel, new stimuli Reading, math comprehension The “sad” brain Left Hemisphere The “gas” pedal Approach responses: initiates movement, initiates thought Controls fine motor: small movements Likes High Frequency Stimulation The “What” part of the brain Memorization of facts Linear Verbal fluency Likes routines, sameness The “happy” brain.

  16. THE FUNCTIONAL DISCONNECTION SYNDROME Embodiment • Children with FDS don't physically feel or think the same as other children. • They feel disconnected from their bodies and their senses. • They feel disconnected socially and emotionally. • They show unusual or disturbing behavior, ranging from impulsive actions and emotional outbursts to an inability to focus. Call 610-518-3370 or click

  17. WHEN THE BRAIN IS OUT OF BALANCE • Likes TV, Video games • Likes things the same, routine, rituals • Sensory problems • Perseveration Call 610-518-3370 or click on www.chestercountyadhdrelief.com

  18. WHEN THE BRAIN IS OUT OF BALANCE 1. Poor Body Awareness (Propriception) n: often referred to as the sixth sense, is the ability to use muscle control and balance to resist gravity. It is also the greatest sensory stimulus for brain growth because, unlike all other sensory stimulation, it occurs 24/7. Call 610-518-3370 or click on www.chestercountyadhdrelief.com

  19. WHEN THE BRAIN IS OUT OF BALANCE 2. Poor Gross and Fine Motor Skills 3. Persistence of Primitive Motor Reflexes 4. Left-Handed, Right-Footed 5. Poor Eye Coordination 6. Poor Social Skills a. Verbal communication cannot happen unless nonverbal communication is learned first Call 610-518-3370 or click on www.chestercountyadhdrelief.com

  20. WHEN THE BRAIN IS OUT OF BALANCE 7.Abnormal Emotional Reactions 8. Sensory Processing Symptoms - vision, hearing, touch, smell and taste a. A fussy eater has an under sensitive sense of taste and smell. Some children cover their ears because they can't stand a noise that sounds normal to everybody else. Some don't like to be hugged, even by their parent. 9. Rapid Heartbeat and Immature Digestion Call 610-518-3370 or click on www.chestercountyadhdrelief.com

  21. Asperger’s is a Neuro-Develpmental Disorder Your Childs brain requires 2 things in order to function & Develop properly: ● Fuel • -Glucose • -Oxygen ● Activation • -Proper stimulation • -Brain-based rehabilitation

  22. So again… We Treat Asperger’s Syndrome Metabolically and Neurologically

  23. Metabolic Care • Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP) • Lipid Panel • CBC (complete blood chemistry with auto-differential) • Thyroid Panel (thyroid anti-bodies: TPO-Ab and TBG)

  24. Have you been told your lab tests are all “Normal”? • Lab ranges are inaccurate • Bell curves are used Functional lab values are more sensitive to reveal problems

  25. Metabolic Care • Adrenal Stress Index (ASI): • We can further test your adrenal glands with a test called an Adrenal Stress Index. This is a salivary test much like DNA testing. Your adrenal glands are your “stress” organs meaning that they react to stress. If you have been or are currently under stress, this test is a must!

  26. Sensitivity Testing • IGG, Stool • The BIG 5 • Gluten, Casein, Egg, Soy, Yeast • MUST RUN THE TEST!

  27. Intestinal Permeability Test LEAKY GUT SYNDROME A) Normal absorption = healthy gut • B) Poor gut barrier : Common problem in celiac disease, autoimmune processes, food sensitivities, CHRONIC PAIN • C) Malabsorption =poor gut health

  28. Food Sensitivities such as gluten and casein may cause; Irritability and occasional meltdowns Inability to focus or concentrate Impulsive actions Aggressive behavior Fatigue Bedwetting Sleep disturbances Learning disabilities Lack of attention, lack of focus and hyperactivity Poor Digestion Cognitive Symptoms - ice. Executive Functions Compromised Immune System Call 610-518-3370 or click on www.chestercountyadhdrelief.com

  29. The Immune Panelsgive us an in depth picture as to what is exactly happening with your immune system. If your child is dealing with an underlying auto-immune disorder, it obviously trumps everything and it must be the first thing to be addressed.

  30. Immune Panels: • A: T and B Lymphocyte & NKC • B: Cytokine Panels— • IL-2, TNF-alpha • IL-4 and IL-10 • C: Natural Killer Cell Activity

  31. There are 2 parts to the Immune System: • TH-1 = T cell Cytokines • IL- 2 and TNF-alpha • TH-2= B Cells • IL-4 and IL-10

  32. Do you have a Active Antigen or Immune Dysregulation? Active antigens are: parasites, bacteria, virus, mold, yeast, fungi, protozoan, foods, chemicals, and heavy metals.

  33. The best indicator for an active antigen • “Helper/Suppresor” ratio on the T & B cell panel. (also called “CD4:CD8” ratio). • If above 2.5the more likely it is that you’re dealing with an Active Antigen. • If the ratio is below 2.0then you are most likely dealing with Immune dysregulation

  34. DNA Stool Ecology Profiles • Determines gut composition by DNA Testing • Test shows presence of : • Good Bacteria • Pathogenic Bacteria • Parasitic Load • Yeast Load • Allows for proper treatment based on identification of DNA.

  35. PANDAS Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections Infection that leads to antibodies attacking Basal Ganglia due to molecular mimicry Chewed up Basal Ganglia leads to OCD and tic disorders…Tourette’s Syndrome Must eliminate pathogen, assess immune panels, and dampen immune responses nutritionally

  36. We Can Also Test For…. H. Pylori: We can run a test for H. Pylori bacteria to determine any problems related to the gut function.. Inflammation:We need to test for inflammation in your system by testing homocysteine levels and C-Reactive Protein. Many patients suffering from chronic health conditions suffer from inflammatory processes. Just about every fibromyalgia patient that I have treated suffers from some form of chronic inflammatory process.

  37. NEUROTRANSMITTERS: We screen for decreased brain neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are vital for proper brain function. Decreased neurotransmitters can part of Neuro-Develpmental Disorders

  38. GLUTATHIONE: We use glutathione in our treatment of ALL chronic conditions (along with other nutritional protocols). Glutathione is the “mother-load” of anti-oxidants. Glutathione cannot be taken orally in pill form as the body will not absorb it. We have seen miraculous changes in our patient population as a result of our specific glutathione protocols.

  39. Has Your Child had All Of These Tests Performed by other Doctors? Why Not?

  40. Neurological Treatments Based on Specific Neurological Testing:

  41. It has been studied that people with Asperger’s Syndrome have significantly less grey matter in the Fronto-Striatal and Cerebellar regions than controls and differences in white matter.

  42. Brain Function Assessment

  43. Neurological Treatment Goal: Create Neuroplasticity #1: Cerebellum Rehabilitation #2: Vestibular Stimulation #3: Balance Training #4:Hemifield visual Stimulation #5 Auditory Low Frequency Stimuli #6 Olfactory Stimulation #7 Gross Motor Exercises #8 Interactive Metronome #9 Taylor Visa-Graph

  44. “BRAIN BASED”Treatment Examples • Gross motor: postural muscle exercises • “Cross Crawl” • Neck raises, chest raises • Balance exercises • Unilateral Chiropractic Adjustments to the left side. • Interactive Metronome • Focus, concentration

  45. INTERACTIVE METRONOME • A double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 9 to 12 year old boys diagnosed with ADHD found those undergoing IM treatment showed statistically significant improvements over both control groups in: • Attention and Concentration • Motor Control and Coordination • Language Processing • Reading Fluency • Control of Aggression/Impulsivity • This study was published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy (AJOT), March 2001.

  46. Hemistim Visual Stimulation Program • Visual “Hemistim” program • High/Low frequency discrimination and stimulation

  47. Effects of other therapies Right Left Right Left Treatment Brain Output Before Brain Output After

  48. Neurological Treatment METABOLIC CAPACITY? HEMISPHERIC BASED?

  49. Neurological Treatment • Office Sessions 2-3 visits per week for the first 90 days. Then Re-Evaluation • Home Therapies are a must • Parents must work with their children at home

  50. I work with other providers such as child psychologists, speech therapists and school staff.
