LOCATION: Nakaseke CMC is located at Nakaseke sub-county headquarters, Nakaseke district, 75 km north of Kampala 16 km off Kampala –Gulu road, The CMC was established in 1997 as part of the series of a pilot initiative to introduce, test, disseminate and assess the impact and viability of CMCs in Africa with funding from International Telecommunication Union (ITU) UNESCO and IDRC and executed by Uganda National Commission for UNESCO on behalf of the government of Uganda. Target Population • The Center covers an area of 25 square kilometers and serves approximately 53,290 people of whom 27,228 are female and 26,071 males respectively. • The major economic activities are trading and farming. The Sub-County is dotted with small trading Centers and small to medium scale agro- processing industry especially maize mills, coffee processors and Up-land Rice milling machines. • There are about 1103 business ( mostly retail shops) and 8000 farming families engage in both crop and livestock keeping ( zero grazing, open diary farming, poultry and piggery). Services :The centre provides telecommunication and information services including telephone, library, internet, educational videos, daily newspapers, photocopying, typesetting, printing, computer training, video coverage, phone charging and a community radio among others. Achievements • The Center has trained over 1500 People in ICT- Computer Application. • Library users have made it to University and tertiary institutions • ICT trainees have managed to find jobs elsewhere. • Farmers have been trained in the use of ICTs and access information on their own. • A solar power system of 22 panels and 24 batteries – power output; 2,400 kw. was acquired using IDRC funds. • Community ownership has been realized through management, local council contributions, fans’ clubs, and youth clubs. • Gender participation in Telecentre activities is realized . • Partnerships are stretched to include NGOs, CBOs, into radio programs and content sharing, Presented by: Balaba Peter

  7. Challenges: limited training and Capacity building opportunities Inadequate funds to pay staff salaries/ wages. Few and Old equipment with low specifications. Inadequate technical capacity to repair and servicing equipment (Computers and Radio) Dependency on pirated software High costs of internet connection and Bandwidth management / sustainability. Political innervations Lack of clear ownership of a Telecentre. Over dependency on volunteer support. Limited coverage of the Radio.
