  4. What is CIC? • College in the Classroom • Concurrent Enrollment Program • Partnerships with Syracuse University (SUPA), Sullivan County Community College • Also includes AP courses

  5. Background • College classes (concurrent enrollment) at MHS since 1990 • Program expanded in 2008 • Increase rigor • Prepare students for 21st century global marketplace • College and Career Ready

  6. SUPA • Syracuse University Project Advance • Five states: NY, NJ, ME, MA, MI, RI • International: Dubai • 35 courses from 22 academic disciplines • 750 teachers, 8000 students, 11,000 course enrollments in over 200 schools • Program is 41 years old (1972-73 school year)

  7. Only NACEP certified program affiliated with a private research university in the northeast • 90% of Project Advance graduates who sent an official SU transcript received recognition (credit, placement, and/or exemption) for their SU courses.

SUPA Course Offerings • Currently offer 9 courses (year of implementation): • Psychology (1990) • Sociology (1990) • Writing Studio (1998)—also fulfills graduation requirement (12th grade ELA) • Narratives of Literature (1998)-- also fulfills graduation requirement (12th grade ELA) • Public Affairs (2005)—also fulfills graduation requirement (Government)

  9. Economics (2006)—also fulfills graduation requirement (Economics) • US History 101 (2008)—also fulfills graduation requirement (11th grade SS) • US History 102 (2008)-- also fulfills graduation requirement (11th grade SS) • Forensics (2009)

Affiliation • Teachers trained at intensive workshops at Syracuse University • Twice yearly department meetings with SU professors and other SUPA teachers • Ongoing curriculum updates and training • Classroom visits by SU professors to ensure quality/level of instruction. • Work submitted to SU professors in some courses • Teachers hold adjunct professor appointments • Same course as is taught on the SU campus

  11. Tuition/College Credits • More than 90% discount over on-campus rate • $110 per credit hour vs $1299 per credit hour on campus (full time) • $330 per 3 credit course vs $3897/$440 v $5196! • SUPA has up to a 60% reduction for students who are free/reduced lunch eligible.

  13. SCCC • Currently offer 9 SCCC courses: • Analytical Geometry & Calculus I • Elementary Statistics • General Chemistry I & II • Non Calculus Physics I & II • Computer Applications • Financial Accounting • Pre-calculus

  14. Affiliation • Professional development with SCCC is still in the beginning stages. • Teachers have been in contact with their counterparts at SCCC to varying degrees. • Plans for class observations & course evaluations just being implemented

Tuition/College Credits • Tuition is $58 per credit hour, a reduction from on campus tuition of approximately $150 per credit hour. • We offer 3 and 4 credit courses for tuition of $174 and $232. • On campus those courses would be $450, $600. • The SCCC Foundation also offers tuition reductions to students eligible for free/reduced lunch. • Students pay $25 per course

  16. Gaining Recognition • Transcript request from SCCC to other college/university • Can be done online, fee • Credits transferable within SUNY system and to many other schools as well. • Other possibilities • Advancement • Exemption

  17. AP Courses • AP Exams in May, 2014 • Cost is about $89 per exam • Potential credit based on test score • Any student can take any AP exam

  19. CIC Grade Results • **chart indicates the number of students who received these grades in the their CIC courses** • Students have earned over 6250 transferable credits. There is a five year success rate of 87%.

Some schools only take 5’s, many more schools have increased to 4’s but most still schools still accept 3’s. Five year success rate of 36%

Cost Differential • AP exams (2013) $89 per test • Reduced for free/reduced lunch students • Fee reduction by College Board • State reimbursement • Fee waiver by school • SCCC tuition: $58 per credit hour • SCCC Foundation Scholarship—pay $25 per course for free/reduced lunch eligible students • SUPA tuition: $110 per credit hour • Student Financial Assistance of 60% for free/reduced lunch eligible students • Other arrangements on case by case basis

  26. So what does all this mean?! • Taking COLLEGE courses NOT high school courses • Expectations are different • Student Responsibility for their own learning • FERPA • College curriculum/college rules • Grading • Attendance

  27. What to expect • Courses are writing intensive • Different kind of writing • More research based • Much more reading than in previous courses • Significant amounts of work outside of class • Expected level of student responsibility and independence

  28. Grading • No grades on report cards in November/April for semester courses • Grade note • Comments • Nature of college course workloads • Full year courses may vary in this • Colleges don’t have “nothing below a 50 rule”!!

  29. The Benefits… • Great opportunity for students to experience college level work in a friendly environment • Easier transition to college • Potential to earn transferable college credit at a significantly reduced cost • Potential for lower tuition bills in the future

  30. Attractive to college admissions offices • assuming success!! • Advanced standing in college • Housing lottery, registration, parking! • Fulfill requirements early allowing for higher level work • Possibility of double major or double minor **Testimonials on my website**

Non-Registration • Students may opt to take courses without registering for college credit • At least 50% must register and pay tuition • SUPA and SCCC requirements • Must register for SUPA or SCCC designation on HS transcript You cannot try to go back and get the credits later. Registration is a one shot deal!

Registration Process • SUPA • Online—no payment, bill sent by SU • Info distributed in classes • Intent to Register forms due to Mrs. Lauri by Friday, 9/20 • SCCC • In school on Thursday, 9/19 at 9:15 am • Must have payment at time of registration • Forms here/in class • AP • Will take place at the end of February, 2014

  33. Financial Aid • Based on Free/Reduced Lunch Status • Must be on master list from cafeteria • Submit forms NOW if you have not already done so! • Parent waiver forms **NEW** • SUPA—60% tuition reduction • SCCC—pay $25 per course • AP—reduction in fee, could be no cost • Other assistance available on a case by case basis.
