  1. Genre research By: Joshua walls and gabriela ross

  2. Audience analysis

  3. Audience analysis contd.... • According to our group romantic was a popular genre due to the fact   that any age group enjoys romantic films. Due to the fact we are all human and like to get sentimental. The opinion also varies because people have a lot of different views and feelings, this shows that you can make any film and as long as you have quality and passion for it people will enjoy it.

  4. Dark knight rises • Dark lighting including hazy effects to emphasize a dark mood • Quick cuts to ensure  of the suspenseful theme • No dialogue  • Non-diegetic sounds (background music only) • Extreme close ups/ close ups/ low angle/ pans/tracking • Fade in/ fade out •  props were associated with the theme • Every color was coordinated with the theme

  5. seven • Music is slow and the tempo matches the cuts • Non-diegetic sounds only/ No dialogue • Quick cuts/ fade in and out • Extreme close ups/ low angle/ high angle • Handheld shots • Dark colors for mysterious theme  • Props were all associated around the theme

  6. The Number 23 • No props/images, only writings • Didn’t give many hints about the plot • Non diegetic, soft and suspenseful music • Writing was Continuously Themed with the title • Bloodshed to emphasize the genre is a thriller • Extreme close-ups, close-ups, pan and tilt • Editing was quick and sharp, portraying the thrilling theme • Used only Two color schemes

  7. Conclusion - Conventions/Trends • We've noticed that the color schemes of these three thriller movies were dark. The entire introduction used about 3-5 colors In all. The colors used were chosen to reveal that the movie would be rather mysterious. Typically bright colors indicate a happier movie perhaps comedy/romantic. In this case any horror/thriller movie coordinates the color schemes specifically to the genre of the movie. • Another convention used within all three movie's INTRODUCTIONS would be the non-diegetic sounds where Background music  was inserted. For example in the Number 23 the music started off soft then slowly began escalating to quick, yet tension filled music which matched the edits. IN SEVEN, the music is slow and dull, therefore creating a mysterious feel. The music added to the edits and images of the introduction must connect with the theme or else it will be misleading to the audience. The music builds the intensity of the movies' beginning if correctly matched with the edits. What we also noticed was that none of these movies integrated dialogue into the introductions, this is so nothing is revealed early on in the movie, thus building tension and thrill.

  8. Conclusion - Conventions/trends • Another convention continuously used was the extreme closeups that took place within most of the intro's. for example in The number 23 the camera would focus on aspects that point out important features later on within the movie. The extreme closeups would reveal the themes of the movie which is crucial for the audience so that they get a clue of what's later to come. The camera would frequently zoom in/out in the movie's to again, show main aspects of the theme. • A trend in thriller movies according to our three chosen films would be the sharp and fast paced editing. This would make the audience ponder about the plot. The agility of the editing creates an intense mood for the movie, thus many thriller movies begin their intro's with it. • The Mise-en-scène of these films were in a way connected with the title of the movie. For example, in the dark night rises, the camera captured the batman signal which indicates that the movie is associated with DC. The setting of the film is in the dull streets of the city and had props that had to do with batman movies such as the batman cape or bats. Mise-en-scène is crucial to a film because costumes/ props/ settings influence the believability of a film in the eyes of the audience.

  9. Films that influenced us • Out of the three films, the two that influenced us the most was Seven and The Number Three.  • IN SEVEN , we liked how the filming was done. The camera was mainly hand held shots which gave it a more natural setting. Also there were many zoom in/outs emphasizing important props that could be clues within the movie. Since there was no people in the intro, we began to see that thriller movies can just zoom in and reveal small details without incorporating characters. The fade in/outs were also a favorite of ours, we liked that it would bring intensity to the film which is what we're looking to include in our film. • In the number 23, we liked the repetition of words within the intro. They repeated 23 numerous times to emphasize that it’s a huge plot in the story. Although they didn’t have props besides the letter, it built suspense and anticipation for the audience. We want our film to have a build-up of intensity so that our audience wonders what's to come. The extreme close ups were something we also favored, it reveals important clues to the story. Also the non-diegetic music highly influenced us because it added to the mysterious tone of the film.

  10. Films that influenced us • The dark night rises wasn’t much of an influence to us because we are aiming at a more realistic type of movie. We didn't want our film to have unhuman like themes/ characters. We're aiming for a more normal yet unexpected type of movie. We did however note how the intro showed the setting to be in dark streets and the props to be "in-character". It's important for the mis-en-scene to be coordinated perfectly so that its more believable to the audience. Therefore we will make sure that anything we use within our film connects with our theme.

  11. Which film company would produce our film? • We believe that out of the big 6 film companies Warner Bros would most likely produce our film. We've noticed that many popular thriller/horror movies are produced by the warner bros. For example, The Dark Night Rises, Seven, the shining, and it.  It would make sense that a company which produces many big thriller movies could also produce ours.
