  2. WHAT IS A THESIS STATEMENT? • The main point or controlling idea of any essay is its thesis. It is an arguable assertion—your opinion or position. • Its primary function is to organize, predict, control, and define the entire paper. • Location: At the end of the introduction. • Length: 1 or 2 sentences. In a longer paper, it could be longer.

  3. HOW DO I DEVELOP A THESIS STATEMENT? • Decide on the topic. • Ask questions about the topic • Narrow to the primary question—focusing on the basic point • The answer is your working thesis.

  4. A Possible Formula • State the topic • + the arguable assertion or opinion • + (for, as, because, since, due to) reasons or supporting arguments • = Working Thesis
