  1. Cosmology Through the UniverseAdventure.org Laurie Kerrigan LBNL IISME mentor George Smoot

  2. The Universeadventure.org website used in conjunction with the Physics in and Through Cosmology Workshop • History & Structure • Evolution of the Universe • Standard Model of Fundamental Particles and Interaction • Evolution of Matter and Energy/ Chemical Evolution • What’sNext Note: underlined text and outlined images are hyperlinks

  3. History and Structure George Smoot mapped the anisotropies in the CMB using the DMR . These are the seeds of galaxies and clusters.

  4. History and Structure Nao Suzuki’s trip through the structures of the Universe and their formation due to luminous and dark matter has changed our view of the Universe from earlier times.

  5. History and Structure Rich Lohman’s activities using HOU demonstrated how to use type 1a supernovae as standard candles. Supernova 94d

  6. Evolution of the Universe Connecting density with temperature in the CMB

  7. Evolution of the Universe Different colors are different wavelengths and therefore different temperatures in the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

  8. Evolution of the Universe Although gravity is the weakest of the four forces it forms the structures in the Universe.

  9. Evolution of the Universe Mia Ihm explains Gravitational lensing

  10. Evolution of the Universe Joe Hennawi’s presentation focused on Dark Matter, Dark Energy, and Gravitational Lensing.

  11. Evolution of the Universe Nakhil Padmanabhan’s discussed the types of expansion the Universe could undergo due to Dark matter & Dark energy.

  12. Sean Fottrell’s activity using data to graphically find the Hubble Constant showed the accelerating expansion of the Universe. Evolution of the Universe Analyzing data from supernovae is one technique scientists use to estimate the age of the universe.

  13. Glen Melnik discussed Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and Time Dilation. Evolution of the Universe

  14. Evolution of the Universe • Rollie Otto’s activity explained blackbodies. • The CMB is an almost perfect blackbody because it emits almost perfectly at all wavelengths.

  15. Evolution of the Universe Travel through the Eras using the Cosmic Calendar!

  16. Standard Model The Standard Model with all its strange quarks, four forces, leptons and supersymmetry were explored during Stu Loken’s talks.

  17. Evolution of matter and Energy/Chemical Evolution The early universe interaction of energy and matter, and the question of the missing antimatter were discussed during Eric Linder’s presentation.

  18. Evolution of Matter and Energy/ Chemical Evolution Peggy McMahan discussed nucleosynthesis starting with the lightest elements formed right after the Big Bang through the heaviest formed in stars.

  19. What’s Next? Research will answer many questions in cosmology. Kevin Lesko discussed the solar neutrino problem. Brian Mendez explained that the WISE NASA mission will study mid-infrared range waves with far greater sensitivity than any previous mission.

  20. What’s Next Search for a Grand Unified Theory through String Theory which may utilize Compacted Dimensions or Branes.

  21. What’s Next • What happened before 10^-44 seconds? • Why are there so many different kinds of particles? • Why did antimatter vanish? • Are there undiscovered laws of nature? • Is there a Grand Unified Theory (GUT)? • What is Dark Energy? • What is Dark Matter?
