Key Dates • Victor Hugo was born on February 26th 1802 • He won first place in a National Poetry contest when he was 17, in 1819 • Victor was married to Adele Foucher, in 1822 • Victor became romantically involved with JuliettDrouet, who became his mistress in 1833, she would then be his secretary and travelling companion for the next 50 years

His work • Hugo wrote many poems • His most famous books were ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ • ‘Les Misérables’ took 16 years to write • The original French book has approximately 1600 pages • ‘Les Misérables’ was published in Brussels, to great public success, but had been banned by the Government

Les Misérables- The Musical • First opened in Paris in 1980 • Music written by Claude-Michel Schönberg • Libretto written by Alain Boubil • It has been translated into 21 languages, been seen by over 55 million people, with each performance having 392 complete costumes and has won over 70 major theatre awards since opening night!
