    • User Interface issues - Non- holistic approach to entire presentation layer

TTWCS v6 - User Interface Improvements

  • TTWCS v6 User Centered Design: Improve TTWCS v6 User Interface

    • Uses a holistic / Top Down approach to the User Interface Design

      • Focus on required Tasking & System Data Requirements

    • Design Intent:

      • Increase combat effectiveness

      • Provide a high level of situational awareness

      • Make TTWCS easier to learn

      • Support reduced manning initiatives

  • Task centered design of TTWCS v6 Presentation Layer

    • Focus presentation layer on operator and supervisor interaction with the system versus software architecture

  • Enabled through a Task Analysis


Task Analysis Definitions

  • Purpose of Task Analysis

    • Overall vision for TTWCS v6 is to increase Land Attack Warfighter effectiveness without increasing workload on the operator.

    • While increasing effectiveness, it is desired to maintain a high level of situational awareness and safety.

    • These goals can be enabled via task-centered design, which begins with conducting a Task Analysis.

  • Why Task Analysis for v6?

    • Task centered design streamlines user workflow, minimizing non-necessary or repetitive actions

    • Saving time / promote situational awareness performing complex tasks under stringent time constraints in a stressful environment.

    • Task centered design is unachievable without understanding user tasks.

    • At a minimum, most critical tasks must be analyzed to create a baseline of Task Analysis for follow-on versions of TTWCS.

    • Task Analysis also supports training design.

General Assumptions

  • Schedule and budget prohibit analyzing all TTWCS Tasks for v6

    • Identify high priority Tasks

      • Mission and Safety Criticality, Frequency, Mental workload, etc

    • Establish baseline for future versions

  • Task Analysis and Usability Testing supports enhancing HCI

    • Specifically identify flow within tasks and Information Requirements

  • HCI will not be enhanced and moved into the "Presentation Layer" if the associated UPE Enhance HCI candidate is not funded

    • Any HCI that is not funded in this way would be only improved from legacy HCI as needed to account for other functional candidates

    • Assumes UPE09 is funded, requiring no additional modifications to “Business Logic” CSCIs

      • UPE09 will address removal of HCI from business logic CSCIs

    • New/modified windows may require additional data from business logic CSCIs

      • Anticipate data requirement additions will be small

  • New functionality uncovered during Task Analysis requires a CR

  • HCI Improvements may include making windows and navigation more intuitive, reduce button clicks, improve “drill-down” features, etc.

  • Technical Description (cont)

    • Changes include:

      • Evaluate changing from AOU terminology to MTST Ellipse terminology

      • Evaluate displaying Block IV Branch ID in Engagement Window

      • Evaluate option to apply the current system planning parameters to selected engagements

      • Evaluate how to reference engagements (e.g., by MSN / TLD / Plan #) to provide for correlation across the system

      • Evaluate ability to globally Add option to apply changes to all existing engagements on the System Planning Parameters Window

      • Evaluate increased Automation of Waypoint Selection and Editing

        • Allow the operator to modify waypoints whenever they are selected without requiring "TLAM PLAN" window to be displayed before the operator can do anything to waypoints graphically.

        • Allow overriding the flight path without selecting "manual" from the TLAM PLAN window.

        • Add Drill Down capability, Max Follow-on Salvo, De-cluttering features, Pre-Planned missions and Launch Basket and Composite Launch Basket to this display

        • Improve ability to evaluate missile flight path by providing single screen that shows:

          • Correct missile path

          • Accurate land masses

          • Display stand-off distances per LAC intentions

          • All airspace control measures

        • Will not require the addition of any digital chart interfaces currently not used by TTWCS

        • Use fleet terminology consistently (e.g. Eliminate “LAC” references and use NTTP standard naming format
