  1. Rates Objective: Student find and compare unit rates such as unit rates and unit price.

  2. Back to Writing Ratios Suppose Ms. McLamb drove 75 miles in 3 hours. Write the ratio of miles to hours in fraction form. This is a rate.

  3. Rate • What is a rate? A rate is a comparison of two quantities using division(sounds like ratios, right?) that have different units. • Example: Reads “60 miles per 2 hours” This is a unit rate

  4. Unit Rate • What is a unit rate? A unit rate is a rate in which the denominator has a quantity of 1 unit. • Example: 4 packets of oatmeal per 2 cup of water.

  5. Writing Rates and unit Rates Find the unit rates and write them in fraction and word form. Kaylie biked 40 miles(mi) in 4 hours(hrs). Write to rate in fraction form. Find the unit rate. Write in word form. Kaylie rode 10 miles per hour. GCF of 40 and 4

  6. Unit Price • What is a unit price? A unit price is a unit rate that compares cost to item(or cost per item) • Example: $5 for 2 bags of family size chips

  7. Application The local farmers market sale lemonade in three sizes. Which size has the lowest price per fluid ounce? Since $0.07 <$0.09 the 12 oz lemonade has the lowest price per fluid ounce.

  8. Example 1: A faucet leaks 668 milliliters of water in 8 minutes. How many milliliter of water does the facet leak per minute?

  9. Example 2: In the 1st Indianapolis 500, the winning car covered 500 miles in 6.7 hours. What as the car’s average rate of speed in miles per hour?

  10. Example 3: Which is the better deal, 450 texts for $49.99 or 800 texts for $62.99?
