  9. Areas Players Score Points

  12. Other Sports/Activities • 10 points per week of season • Starting in January • Through end of season • Communication with other coaches is crucial • Encourages athletes to participate and compete in other sports & activities • Competition is a good thing! • Carryover skills/attributes

  13. School Spirit • Student support for football is phenomenal • Need to show similar support • Each player receives a card • Name on it • Ten events • Coach has to sign and date card • 2 points per event • Double points for non-athletic events • Replace damaged, not lost, cards

  14. Community Service • Area in need of most improvement • 5 points per hour of service (unlimited) • All team members must have 2 hours by the end of July • Prefer these to be done as a team • Idea must be approved by coach (form) • Signature from supervising adult

  15. Miscellaneous • Speed camp – run by our track coach • 2 days per week in winter • 2 points per day • Does not replace lifting requirement • Other opportunities as they arise • Don’t want to go crazy with these though • Emphasis needs to be on key areas

  16. Competition Day • Last day before our July 4th break • First round – station rotation • Push ups, Pull Ups, Sled Push, Obstacle Course, Bench Press • Average Reps (total reps divided by players) • Second round – head to head • Brackets • Tug of War (2 types), Harness Pull, Relay Race, Med Ball Relay

  17. Competition Day (cont.) • Scoring: 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (based on number of teams) • Team earns points for every event to keep it interesting • Total points get added to overall team points for summer segment • Winners get card for free pizza and Gatorade (and bragging rights…)

  18. Points • 3 segments – points start over at beginning • Post standings around school every 2 weeks • Ranked by average number of points per team • Other students pay attention to this as well • Captains get points sheets for their team • Discuss other topics at meetings • File copies of sheets in binder • Points sheets • Discipline sheets with deducted points

  19. Rewards • Individual improvement: strength, agility, community service, camaraderie, competitiveness, academic standing, etc. • Tangible rewards for points based on total points as a team (all must have community service) • 2750: yellow R-B off-season t-shirt • 3000: maroon R-B off-season t-shirt & shorts • 3250: black R-B off-season t-shirt, shorts, & R-B mini-helmet

  20. Winners & Losers • Winning team: • Names in fall program • Recognized at end of season banquet • Ideally, some kind of “traveling trophy” but I haven’t figured that out yet. • Losing Team: • Clean & reorganize weight room at end of the summer • Used to extend into season – bad idea! • Segment winners get free pizza card • Segment losers are not “punished”

  21. Issues that have come up • Injured players? – physical therapy schedule • Sick players? – excuse them or give them points? • New players? • Criteria to meet before being placed on a team • How to score week between seasons (rest week)? • Financial commitments for rewards • Fundraising incentive for players • Booster Club/Dad’s Club • Local business support

  22. Advice • Communicate with coaches, captains, and players constantly • Be positive – negative things will occur, focus on the positives your kids will get out of it • Be organized – binder works well, Excel spreadsheets, posting the points constantly keeps me on top of it • Give it time – players have to learn this is part of being a Richmond-Burton Rocket

  23. Results • 75% of players accounted for in winter • Spring number is always higher • 16 – 22 daily since program implemented in January • 20 in winter sport • Freshmen are important to Juniors • Players know who is showing up & who isn’t
