Today’s Statistics • 48 million Americans smoke • 4 million teens smoke • 13 is the average age at which people start smoking in Utah • Of the 6,000 adolescents who try cigarettes each day,1/2 of them will become regular smokers. • 80% of adult smokers believe they WILL die of tobacco related causes if they don’t quit • 434,000 deaths per year related to tobacco • Every HOUR of every DAY of every MONTH 50 people will die of tobacco-related problem. • Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death. • On average, smokers die 13 to 14 years earlier than nonsmokers.

  3. Associated Diseases • Emphysema- lungs produce excessive mucous; difficult to breathe • Cancer- an abnormal growth of cells. Specifically lung cancer • Coronary Heart Disease – Including; heart attacks and arteriosclerosis.

  4. The #1 cause of these diseases? SMOKING • Tobacco causes more illnesses and death than all other addicting drugs combine.

Ingredients Cigarette smoke contains 4000 chemicals • Carbon Monoxide- found in car exhaust, DEADLY • Tars- dark, sticky mixture of chemicals • Arsenic-weed and insect killer • Hydrogen Cyanide- poison; used in a gas chamber • Formaldehyde- preservative; preserves the dead • Nicotine (insecticide)- most physically addictive

  6. Other Problems • Peptic ulcers • Fertility problems • Premature babies • Stillborn babies • Cervical cancer • Tooth decay • Gum disease • Pre mature skin wrinkling- AGING!

  7. Nicotine • Is the main drug in tobacco that is responsible for addiction and keeps people smoking despite harmful effects. • Boosts the amount of a brain chemical called dopamine. Dopamine  Feelings of pleasure  Needs to feel normal • After a smoker inhales cigarette smoke, nicotine enters the blood in the lungs, goes through the heart and is pumped to the brain- a journey that takes on 8 seconds • Nicotine is similar in size and shape as brain chemicals that regulate feelings of alertness and pleasure or satisfaction.

Cost of smoking • The estimated annual cost of smoking totals to $5,000 a year. • What are three things you could do with that amount of money? • The cigarette industry spends billions each year on advertising and promotions. • $9.94 billion total spent in 2008 • $27 million spent a day in 2008

Smokeless Tobacco cont. • Cancers associated with smokeless tobacco, CHEW: Tongue, mouth, throat, larynx & cheek cancers • 30,000 Americans learn they have mouth and throat cancers each year. • 8,000 Americans die from oral cancers each year. Only 5% of people diagnosed with an oral cancer survive more than 5 years.
