  1. The Role & Purpose of Government And to what extent should that purpose be served?

  2. For each of the following selections, flip the card at your table to agree or disagree based on a brief table discussion.

  3. #1 • The Federal Emergency Management Agency, a government organzation, will pay for disaster relief in many areas after Hurricane Issac. • Do you agree that the government should pay for such relief? Why/why not?

  4. #2 • Obamacareis a government mandate that all people should have health insurance. The constitutionality of this went to the US Supreme court who upheld the Obama administration’s right to require people to buy health care. Is this a goo • Do you think the government should be able to require this of its citizens? • Agree or disagree?

  5. #3 • Should the United States require all men, within 90 days of their 18th birthday living in the US (documented or undocumented), to sign up for the US Selective Service? • Yes/ Agree • No/ Disagree

  6. #4 • The US government should provide money to farmers to help them be able to produce farms goods for consumers • Agree/disagree? • (Table from Wikipedia) • The US should regulate prices of junk food to encourage people to eat more healthy options (or not subsidize farmers of the products that help make junk food) • Agree/Disagree?

  7. #5 • Last year, ATT and T-Mobile wanted to merge into one large (very large) company in the mobile phone market. The government was concerned that this would prevent competition and therefore breaking the law (anti-trust laws). • Should companies be prevented from getting too big? Yes/Agree No/Disagree

Purpose of All Governments • To enable a society to carry out its policies and protect its citizens from violence and injustice • This is done through 3 kinds of power • Legislative: the power to make laws • Executive: the power to carry out/enforce laws • Judicial: the power to interpret laws & settle disputes

  10. Types of Government dependent on values • US: Framers had particular values that helped determine the type of government that was established. • How would the US gov’t arrange to use these powers? • To be effective, a government structure must coincide with the values of the society it rules

  11. Types of Government • Totalitarianism (most state control over ind.) • Dictatorship • Monarchy • Constitutional Monarchy • Representative Democracy (Republic) • Direct Democracy • Anarchy (no state control)

  12. Totalitarianism • State controls all aspects of individual lives • Social laws • Economic system • Political power • No discussion/debate over anything • Examples?

  13. Dictatorship • Dictator/Ruler holds absolute power • Dictator makes/breaks laws as he sees fit • Brutality used to enforce power • Could be military dictatorship • Could be a junta (small group) • Single-Party dictatorship: about keeping the party in power, not necessarily the person

  14. Monarchy • King/Queen and his/her court hold all power • Power passed through marriage and heredity The Sun King – King Louis XIV

  15. Constitutional Monarchy • King/Queen in power, but limited by a constitution • Power of monarch depends on specific constitution • People generally have voting rights of some kind • EX: Thailand, United Kingdom, Sweden

Representative Democracy • Republic: individuals vote for representatives in gov’t • Presidential-legislative: like US – we elect legislature and president who share power • Parliamentary: Voters elect legislature (parliament) who elect/appoint a prime minister & cabinet (England) • Presidential-Parliamentary Democracy (France) where voters elect parliament AND president who share power

  17. Direct Democracy • Each person votes for all government activity • People hold great amount of direct power over each decision, but very laborious • Ancient Athens (voting among only “citizens”)

  18. Anarchy • Lack of recognized politicial authority • Could refer to a state of lawlessness and disorder • Or it could refer to the choice to not have an established government • Individual has ultimate power over his economic/political/social situation (or

  19. Theocracy a state in which religious law and religion are central to the ruling body Most states today have theocratic aspects, but also have secular (non-religious) aspects i.e. Israel

  20. Values Activity • Remember, a state’s government should reflect the values of the state • What are your group’s values? • How did those values contribute to your decision on what form of government to create?
