  3. What are synthetic phonics? Approach to supporting pupils to read and write quickly. Single sounds (a, b, c ) Blend sounds (bl, cl, fl, tr, pr) Consonant digraphs (ch, wh, sh) Vowel digraphs (ea, oi, ai, oo)

  4. How do we teach it? • Learning through actions, pictures, stories and sounds. • Active learning approach - short, sharp bursts!

  5. The first sounds… • We teach the sounds not the letter names. The first set of sounds we teach are: S P A I T N Have a go practising these sounds!

  6. Making and Reading Words How many sounds in cat? CA T

  7. Making and saying sounds • Try to make sounds as constant as possible • No vowel sound on the end • f, n, m, g

  8. Making words • Once children know these sounds we can start making words. • Sat • Pin • Nip • Sit • Pit • Pat • Pip • Sip

  9. Where it gets a bit tricky… • There are many sounds • Some of these sounds are made up of more than one letter including… • ai as in rain • oa as in boat • sh as in shop
