  2. Objectives • Understanding the connections between everything around you, everything you do originates from the world around you. • Survey aspects of intercultural communication • Connect this week’s readings to this week’s lecture. Also, connect this week’s reading to other core topics.

  3. SUBCULTURE: The Meaning of Style • Style in constructed through combination of clothing, music, dance, make-up. • Outlines individual style differences of specific subcultures: reggae, punks. • Even two unrelated things can be connected at a deep structural level. • Different cultures such as white punk and black reggae are connected: they have similar styles.

  4. It’s All Wrong, but It’s all Right:Creative Misunderstandings in Intercultural Communication • Music is a form of transcultural communication that can be misinterpreted or misunderstood. • Intercultural miscommunication can serve as sites of creativity. • “We can never really know how the world looks or sounds through the eyes and ears of others; we use metaphors to convey our experiences…” (Lipsitz)

  5. GAME TIME! • Pictionary • Split into 2 Groups

  6. Activity 1 • Discuss among your groups about different forms of media and how they are culturally influenced and influencing. Can include a piece of literature, a movie, a song, etc.

  7. Activity 2 • Punk music reflected what society was going through at the time of its origin. Things went bad and Punk allowed musicians to show this through their music. Discuss how music today reflects our modern society.

  8. Reflective Activity • Based on today’s discussion and readings, how does the way people express themselves or yourself relate to culture, the world around us, and other Core subjects related to this topic? • What was your favorite part of today’s discussion? • How can I increase student engagement in future discussions?
