Standards & Competencies • Academic Development Standard A: Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the life span • A:A1 Improve Academic Self-concept • A:A1.3 Identify attitudes and behaviors that lead to successful learning • A:A2 Acquire Skills for Improving Learning • A:A2.3 Demonstrate how effort and persistence positively affect learning

  4. WHY WhyTry? • Students rank ordered the top reasons they fall behind in school. • Top 2 reasons: • The work is too hard (I’ve stopped trying) • I don’t care about school; I lack motivation

  5. Process Data • Group met once per week during 2nd Trimester, using WhyTry curriculum. • Students completed Progress Reports • Students were offered tutoring/mentoring opportunity with Manual HS students late in the trimester. Only a few students took advantage of the opportunity.

  16. Implications • Areas for improvement: • I could have been more consistent with use of progress reports. It was difficult to get students and teachers to fill these out. • Students didn’t start meeting with high school tutors until late in T2. It would have been better if I had been able to find enough tutors for all students. • Next Steps: • Need for continued support in T3 for struggling students • Daily check-ins in addition to weekly group meetings for struggling students
