  1. THE CELL

  2. CELL THEORY • All living organisms are made up of cells.

  3. CELL THEORY • Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in an organism. • Cells control birth, growth, development, reproduction and death. All life functions begin as a cellular process.

  4. CELL THEORY • Organisms can be unicellular (one-celled) or multicellular (many-celled) • Cells contain organelles ( some with membranes), which are small structures inside that do different jobs. • All cells come from other cells.

  5. Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic Cells Cells can be classified into 2 groups.

  6. Eukaryotic Cells Have a defined nucleus. Prokaryotic Cells Cells can be classified into 2 groups.

  7. Eukaryotic Cells Have a defined nucleus. Found in organisms that are made up of many cells. Prokaryotic Cells Cells can be classified into 2 groups.

  8. Eukaryotic Cells Have a defined nucleus. Found in organisms that are made up of many cells. Animals Prokaryotic Cells Cells can be classified into 2 groups.

  9. Eukaryotic Cells Have a defined nucleus. Found in organisms that are made up of many cells. Animals Plants Prokaryotic Cells Cells can be classified into 2 groups.

  10. Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic Cells No structured nucleus Exist as single-celled organisms Bacteria Cells can be classified into 2 groups.

  11. Animal Cell Plant Cell

  12. Animal Cell Plant Cell Nucleus: Is the “brain” of the cell. It controls cells’ functions and it contains DNA.

  13. Cell membrane (plasma membrane) : Allows for certain things to enter and exit the cell. It maintains cell’s homeostasis.

  14. Ribosomes: Make proteins for the cells

  15. Mitochondria: “power house of the cell”, this is where cells receive their energy.

  16. Cell Wall: Supports and protects plant cells.

  17. Chloroplast : Where plants absorb sunlight, and make food (carbohydrates).

  18. Let’s look at some actual plant and animal cells!
