  2. Why ecoAPNIC? • Raised awareness of environmental concerns by the scientific community • Part of APNIC’s corporate responsibility • Many countries in Asia Pacific affected by climate change

What have we done so far? • Reduced paper consumption • Printed material at meetings • Available but not included in all kits by default • Apster primarily in electronic format • Member kit review • Electronic billing • Electronic New Year’s greetings • APNIC CD • Allows us to provide more information electronically • Double-sided printing by default • Recycled paper used by default

  4. Other eco work • General sensible practices • Turning off equipment when not in use • Reducing wastage • Individual initiatives • Car pooling, walking, public transport • Cycling • Hybrid car! (Sanjaya)

Next steps • ecoAPNIC now “official” APNIC project • Initially staff driven project • Now managed like any inter-departmental APNIC project • First step: Waste audit • Gives us a clear idea of where we are and where we want to go • Further investigation • Offsetting carbon emissions • Consult eco architect when/if moving offices

Things You can do • Transportation • Car pool • Ride your bike, walk, use public transport • Investigate carbon offsetting programs • Around the office • Double-sided printing • Recycle paper, cardboard etc • Buy recycled paper • Recycle / refill printer cartridges • Use compact fluorescent bulbs • Reduce water waste • Turn off equipment when not in use!
