  4. Commodities In News ECONOMIC NEWS Chana settled down as anticipation of higher supplies from new season crop and favorable climate across chana growing states-Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh weighed on prices. The sources stated that spot markets panicked due to continuous raids of government against pulses hoarders. This has added a negative sentiment in futures market and also reduced the miller’s offtake in local mandies. However, the chana arrivals were also reported lower at 20 motors today against 30 motors of previous year. were also stabilised This year chana is sown in 85.48 lakh hectares (lh), compared with 85.74 lh last year, as per data release by Agriculture Ministry on Jan 22. This year area under chana is lower than the average and normal area shown in the country. The acreage under chana reported higher in Maharashtra (15.03 lh Vs 12.79 lh), Andhra Pradesh (3.32 lh Vs 2.67 lh) and Karnataka compared to last year’s acreage but slightly lower in Rajasthan (12.35 lh Vs 12.56 lh) and MP as per data released by respective state agriculture department. Ruing that despite advancements Indian agriculture is yet to be completely out of the "clutches of weather", President Pranab Mukherjee expressed "grave concern" over likely decline in farm output for the second-straight year due to deficient rains. With majority of the cultivatable area under severe climatic conditions like drought, floods and cyclones, he called for serious efforts to overcome the challenge and make Indian agriculture sector resilient to weather fluctuations.President asked the Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) to develop climate resilient technological solutions by leveraging opportunities from frontier science like biotechnology and nano-technology. Mukherjee also spoke about import dependence on pulses and edible oils.Addressing the 54th convocation of IARI, he said: "Despite the advancements made, Indian agriculture is yet to be completely get out of the clutches of weather."President also pointed out that the country's foodgrain production fell to 253 million tonnes in 2014-15 crop year (July-June) from a record 265 million tonnes in 2013-14 on account of 12 per cent deficit in rainfall."Nature has not been kind to us this year as well. A deficient monsoon followed by a further dry spell is likely to affect agricultural production for the second year in a row. This is an area of grave concern."The time is ripe for some serious efforts as 80 per cent of the area under cultivation in India is in the grip of severe climatic conditions like drought, floods and cyclones," he said.Stating that global climate change could aggravate these problems, Mukherjee said the IARI must leverage opportunities from frontier sciences such as biotechnology, synthetic biology, nano-technology, computational biology, sensor technology and geo-spatial technology to develop solutions."Innovation in agricultural techniques and practices must be supported through infusion of funds, mentoring of ideas, and technical assistance. The risk-taking ability of farmers must be boosted. The newly- launched crop insurance scheme will leverage technology to provide risk cover to the farmers," he said. Soyabean settled down on account of lower demand for soybean crush by oil mills. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) trimmed 2015- 16 United States soybean production forecast and also cut its forecast for ending stockpiles, the department said in its World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates report. USDA maintain US, the world's biggest bean grower, 2015-16 production estimates to 107 million tons compared to 108.4 in the previous month estimates and 106.9 million tons a year ago.The cancelled orders came at a time when world buyers begin to shift soybean purchases from the US to South America, where newly harvested soybean crops are supplying the global market. Better weather in Brazil also weighed on prices. A drier weather forecast in Brazil will likely speed harvest progress, intensifying competition for world business as exporters there ramp up international sales. India edible oil export during the month of December plunged 85.41% from a year earlier on higher prices of the oilseeds in the local market, data released from Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) showed. climate- resilient technological 4
