  1. Bioinformatics Program By: Aarjoo Bk

  2. Day 1 • We had a brief introduction to Bioinformatics • Learned about DNA • DNA sequencing • ATGC or in RNA, the T becomes a ‘U’ • Only some of the videos such as the diseases one was interesting to watch • Extracted Nucleic Acid from fruits • I really liked how we had a hands on activity rather than just a video or a lecture

  3. Day 2 • DNA bracelet • We made bracelets using colored beads which represented the different letters(ATGC) in a sequence • We also used the translation table to figure out what type of amino acid each sequence was • Bio-Linux • How to install Bio-Linux on a computer • I liked how we were taken step by step during this process • Basic Linux commands • We got to experiment with Pico and Perl

  4. Day 3 • Bioinformatics software/websites • NCBI • We used NCBI to search nucleotide sequences and analyze them • BLAST • Can be used to find similarities between sequences • EMBOSS • We used the different EMBOSS command line programs such as: seqret, entret, transeq, etc which was really helpful • I liked how we got more practice with Bio-Linux since it by using

  5. Day 4 • Project Work • We obtained the target sequences of the organisms using seqret • Primers • Designed primers by finding similar stretches of DNA (we used Jemboss applications to find it) • We identified various organisms through the primers constructed
