  3. WASC Goal Action Plan#3 Increase the number of Under-represented students in higher level Honors/AP classes

  4. National Standards ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT Standard A: Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the life span. Standard B: Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college.

  5. Student Competencies • A:A1.5 Identify attitudes and behaviors that lead to successful learning • A:B2.2 use assessment results in educational planning • A:B2.6 understand the relationship between classroom performance and success in school

  6. Target Group 9th grade (n=78) participants Under-represented Students currently enrolled in a College Prep program study Minimum math level of ALGEBRA 1

  7. Why? • AB 1802 Legislation requires teaching A-G • WASC Accreditation • Action Plan #3 • Increase number of Students prepared to enroll in Honors/AP • Increase Amount of Students CSU/UC Eligible by Senior Year – Our data demands it! • Equity/access for all students! It’s the right thing to do!

  8. Our Problem Percent of UC/CSU Eligibility declining for Asian/White Hispanic (while improving) issignificantly lower than other groups

  9. Our Goal in doing this project … To Increase Enrollment of Underrepresented students in A-G and Honors, and AP Courses To increase percentage of underrepresented students Completing A-G, Honors, & AP

Intentional Guidance Curriculum 4 Session of Small Group Guidance Lessons (Jan, Feb, Mar, May) Lesson Content: • Progress Report, self evaluation • Honors/AP prerequisites • A-G Requirements, high school planning • WEB-based Resources for college eligibility course management • Transcript Review • PSAT test prep strategies Parent Session – January 7, 2009

  11. What do they Believe? Increase the number of students who recognize a connection between enrolling in AP/Honors courses and being admitted to a UC or a CSU college

  12. What do they Know? Increase Percentage of Students who know the Math Requirements for UC/CSU.

  13. Every student in the targeted Intentional Intervention program created their personal www.CaliforniaColleges.eduA-G tracking account to ensure they are on target for CSU/UC eligibility

  15. What SKILL did you learn? 48 students 0 students 100% of students attending sessions entered their A-G course sequence from their transcript on www.CaliforniaColleges.edu account

  18. Grade Improvement Number of D/F grades decreased from 1st Quarter 1st Semester Grade Report

  19. Enrollment in Rigorous Courses Increases seen in percentage of students in targeted group opting to enroll in College Prep, Honors or AP courses for upcoming school year

  20. Enrollment in Dev Civ (H) Currently Dev Civ (H) has a 20% enrollment by underrepresented students. Increase in requests for next year.

  21. Our GOAL UC/CSU Eligibility*(2008 data not posted yet) INCREASE IN ALL GROUPS!!! Every student eligible!

Summary/Implications: • Lessons have raised the level of concern among students in this population • Students appear to be interested in tracking their eligibility for College Admissions (using CaliforniaColleges.edu) • We have queried the data and are currently working with students who are in danger of earning less than a C- in any UC/CSU A-G classes • Advising students of requirements for AP/Honors course selection at time of Spring Programming • Maintaining contact with parents via Email communication • Assisting students in signing up for summer school to remediate non-qualifying grades in the A-G subjects

Recommendations • Needs to be a school wide effort to improve A-G completion rates among underrepresented population. • Consider giving A-G guidance lesson at Faculty Meeting • Lessons to include • which high school graduation requirements meet A-G • checklist for A-G subject completion • Review of A-G on transcript and exported data query • CaliforniaColleges High School planner tool, etc. • Continue to Evaluate Effectiveness of Small Group Guidance Curriculum and Make Modifications Accordingly

  24. NEXT STEPS Present Results Data to Department Chairs, Faculty and Administration Increase the number of PSAT takers among the Underrepresented Population: • Offer PSAT test preparation strategy lesson • Contact each student/parent regarding sign up dates for the PSAT • Work with department chairs to agree upon % pool to set for AP Potential report • Use the results of the PSAT to access AP Potential report from the CollegeBoard • Continue to monitor the target group through the 10th and 11th grade
