  1. Holzmaden By: Tim Keating

  2. Basic Information In this area you can find a number of fossils from the Jurassic time period. Holzmaden is an area known the fossils that can be found in the areas shale quarries. Holzmaden is a small town near Stuttgart, Germany.

  3. Types of fossils you can find in Holzmaden • Ammonites • Belemnites • Ichthyosaurs • Squid Lias zeta ammonite

  4. Ammonites • Ammonites can be found in the clays in Holzmaden and are often found beautifully preserved.

  5. Belemnites • Belemnites are the inner shells of squid-like animals and are EXTREMELY common in Holzmaden. It is believed that these animals were hunted much like fish are now in the present day by sharks

  6. Icthyosaurs • Most commonly found are Icthyosaurs vertebras • Judging from these vertebras paleologists have concluded that Icthyosaurs could have attained the size of sperm whales

  7. Icthyosaurs (cont.) • One of the most famous exhibits is this almost four-metre long ichthyosaur - a dam with one of her young already born and five embryos in her womb.

  8. Squid • Squid is somewhat common in Holzmaden, you can usually find that “hooks” of the squid are still intact and makes for a good characteristic to look for to identify squid

  9. The Hauff Museum • The Hauff Museum is the largest privately run natural history museum in Germany today • The Museum houses some of the finest fossils from the Jurassic fauna known as the Fauna of the Jurassic Sea • In addition to what we have already talked about you can also find fossils such as:

  10. The Hauff Museum (cont.) • Plesiosaurs • Marine crocodiles • Fish • Sea lilies • Pterosaurs Fish in this time had teeth and were seen more as predators The crocodiles of the Jurassic sea, the steneosaurs, were inhabitants of the offshore sea and of river deltas. Only fully grown animals ventured out far into the open sea. Their body form resembles that of today's Only 13 complete specimens and scattered remains of plesiosaurs have so far been found in the Posidonia shale of Holzmaden.

  11. Holzmaden • In the area around Holzmaden, slate is still quarried today in quarries of up to twelve metres in depth. The slate is mainly used for floor slabs and table tops. The quarrymen come across the fossils by chance. The fossils are salvaged by the museum's preparators.

  12. 5 Questions: • 1. Where is Holzmaden? • Austria, Germany, Sweden, Czech Republic • 2. Which fossil didn’t we talk about today? • Ammonites, Pterosaurs, Marine Alligators • 3. Which fauna are fossils found at Holzmaden included in? • Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous • 4. The most famous exhibit in Holzmaden is a fossil of a… • Squid, Icthyosaur, Ammonite, Belmnite • 5. Icthyosaurs are thought to be as large as… • Great White Sharks, Sperm Whales, Orca Whales
