  2. Background • Marfan syndrome is named after Antoine Marfan , he is a french pediatrician, found this condition in a 5 year old girl in 1896

  3. Symptoms • Affects the skeletal system • Grow taller than average • Have long slender limbs • Pain in Joints, bones, and muscles

  4. Symptoms Cont. • Unusually long fingers and toes Spine curves

  5. Symptoms Cont. • Small jaws cause speech disorders • More likely to have problems with eyes

  6. Diagnosis and Life Span • The diagnosis is based on family history and combination of symptoms • Life expectancy has increased 25% since 1972 • The average age has gone from in their 40s-70s

  7. Transferred • Each parent with Marfan has a 50% chance to pass it on to their children • males and females both have the same risk • It is a mutation in a gene and is dominate

  8. Interesting information • Flo Hyman was an Olympic silver medalist in volleyball in 1984. She had Marfan Syndrome and died unexpectedly at a match.
