(1/2) • Combines on-the-jobtraining with academic instruction for those entering the workforce • Apprenticeships help individuals put their academic skills to practical use in various careers • Internshipsare often short-term, <1 year, unpaid • Apprenticeshipslast 3 - 4 years, paid, begin age 16 - 18

  4. What is an Apprenticeship? (2/2) • Most common path to careers in other countries • Austria (40%), Germany (51%), Switzerland (63%) • Best in U.S. is Apprenticeship 2000 in Charlotte, NC • NCTAP working closely with Apprenticeship 2000 • Other similar programs under development in NC

What is NCTAP? • 6,400 hours of learning manufacturing skills • 1,600 hours of college education • Journeyman Certificate by the NC Department of Commerce & USDOL • Associate Degree in Mechatronics from Wake Tech Community College • Dual Training - Academics in College / hands on at company • Guaranteed job opportunity after graduation

Why do we invest in a 4 year program? • Buhler’s apprenticeship tradition for 100 years • To be competitive on the global market we need “Best People”, NCTAP provides that to us • NCTAP is a great alternative for young people to get a great start on their professional lives • NCTAP sets a new standard for workforce education in North Carolina • We believe in apprenticeship that promotes technical, methodology, and social skills • We can have that only in partnership with a Community College

  10. NCTAP – How does the 4 year program look like Apprentices are employed by the company right from the start in year 1. Education Partner: Work & School- 1 day per week (School) Year 4 Work & School - 1 day per week (School) Year 3 Work & School - 1 day per week (School) Year 2 Local High School: Classes to close gaps 12th Grade at High School – ½ day school, ½ day at work Year 1

Perceptions about Apprenticeships in the USA • Unionized • 2nd choice career, only for bad students • No career chances, locked in the trade • Manufacturing is dirty work • Apprentice has to pay for education • Why to invest in something that long-term? • Employer driven • Tough requirements (NCTAP 2.8 GPA) • Broad, well rounded dual training opens a lot of career doors  it’s a launching pad • Today very clean (has to meet quality standards) • Get paid while learn & work, no debt after graduation • High ROI during and after the apprenticeship for an employer (skillset, work culture understanding, loyalty etc.)

Why do we need a strong partnership with Community Colleges? • Partnership guarantees us a degree which is important for students and parents • Strengthen the partnership between employers and Community College because we are communicating constantly • Great combination between… … a strong practical education at the employer site … the theoretical knowledge from the college  Path of success for a wide ranging and broad education for our next generation!
