  2. 5 Components of a Relationship • Compatibility: Finding out if you are compatible with someone involves both the Mind and the Heart. • Chemistry: Having chemistry is partly emotional and involves the heart. Sometimes these feelings come before we know the person well. • Character: Getting to know someone’s character takes time and you must be intentionally looking for those character traits, so that involves the mind. • Communication: Communication is never easy or automatic . We must be intentional about being personal in our communication. • Commitment: Sometimes you feel like following though with a commitment other times you keep the commitment because it was a decision made in your mind.

  5. Facts on Date Rape • 1. Date rape is forced or coerced sex between partners, dates, and friends. • 2. Can be coerced both physically and emotionally. “ you really want it” threats to break up. • 3. If a person has too much to drink or is on drugs he/she cannot consent to sex and having sex with them is legally rape. • 4. Date rape drugs that render the victim unconscious and limit memory. (odorless, tasteless, and hard to detect.) • 5. If you don’t want to have sex say NO like you mean it and fight it off. • 6. Date rape is the most common form of rape 78% with 1 in 4 girls falling victim • 7. Although girls are more often victims of rape guys are not safe they can be raped also. • 8. NO MEANS NO!!!!

STD INFORMATION • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) or sexually transmitted infections (STI) - are infectious diseases spread from person to person through sexual contact. • Epidemic- occurrences of diseases in which many people in the same place at the same time are infected. 65 million people in USA are infected with STD’s

  7. Signs and symptoms of std ’s Asymptomatic-without any symptoms of a disease. Why do people go undiagnosed and untreated? 1. Many people with STD’s are without symptoms. 2. They fail to report STD’s to the health department. 3. Embarrassment

  8. Teens at High risk • 10,000 teens are infected with a STD daily. WHY? • Being sexually active with more than one partner. • Engaging in either unprotected or protected sex. • Selecting high risk partners. • Using alcohol and other drugs.

  9. Consequences of std’s 1. Some STD’s are incurable!!! A. Virus B. Bacteria C. Protozoan D. Lice 2. Some STD’s cause cancer. A. Hepatitis B causes cancer of the liver. B. HPV causes cervical cancer.

  10. Consequences of STD: • 3. Some STD’s can cause complications that affect the ability to reproduce A. Females can develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which damages reproductive organs and can cause sterility. • 4. Some STD’s can be passed from an infected female to her child before, during, or after birth. A. STD’s can damage the bones, nervous system, and brain of a fetus B. Premature births can result, and infants infected with STD’s at delivery may become blind or develop pneumonia and some may die

Ways to avoid STD’s • Abstinence- the deliberate decision to avoid harmful behaviors, including sexual activity before marriage and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. • Sexual activity is the cause-----STD’s are the effect/result. 2. Use refusal skills to avoid situations in which you may be at risk.

Human Papilloma Virus • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)- is a virus that can cause gentile warts or be asymptomatic. • Most common STD in USA. 50-75% of sexually active citizens acquire HPV at some time throughout their lives. There are 30 different types of HPV. • Pap test determines HPV infection. • 3. HPV can cause Cervical Cancer, cancer of the penis, and anus.

Genital Warts • Genital Warts- are reddish or pink warts with cauliflower tops that appear on the genitals, vagina, or the cervix one to three months after the infection from HPV. • Genital Warts are highly infectious and is spread from person to person through contact. 2. 3 months for infection to appear. 3. Infants born to families infected with HPV may develop warts in their throats, obstructing the breathing passage. 4. Removal is possible, but Wart will reappear.

  14. Chlamydia Chlamydia- is a bacterial infection that affects the reproductive organs of both males and females. • 40% of cases reported in teens 15-19 years old. • Mostly asymptomatic 3. Males- might have discharge from penis and pain during urination.

  15. Chlamydia Women • Females- signs and symptoms include: • vaginal discharge • painful urination • abdominal pain A. When Chlamydia is left untreated it can cause infertility in males and females, PID, and premature births. (Infertility is not being able to have kids.) B. Antibiotics can cure Chlamydia

  16. Genital Herpes Genital herpes- is an STD caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two types of the herpes virus: • Herpes simplex 1- can cause cold sores, fever blisters in, or around the mouth.

  17. Genital Herpes Herpes simplex 2- can cause blister like sores on, in, or around the vagina, penis, and anus. A. Genital herpes can be asymptomatic, but blister like sores develop on genitals. B. The virus can spread without symptoms. C. Medication can relieve symptoms but not cure the virus. D. Valtrex helps dry up blister like sores.

  18. Gonorrhea • Gonorrhea- is a bacterial STD that usually affects the mucous membranes. • Symptoms for males, Gonorrhea have penile discharge and pain during urination. • Symptoms for females, Gonorrhea causes vaginal discharge, pain during urination, and puss-like sores inside the vagina.

  19. Gonorrhea 3. The bacteria can spread to the bloodstream and cause permanent damage to the joints. 4. In infants, Gonorrhea can cause blindness.

  20. Trichomoniasis Trichomoniasis- is an STD caused by a microscopic protozoan that results in infections of the vagina, urethra, and bladder. 1. Females signs and symptoms include, limited symptoms with a development of vaginitis. A. Vaginitis- an inflammation of the vagina characterized by greenish frothy discharge, odor, irritation, and itching.

  22. Syphilis Syphilis- is an STD that attacks many parts of the body and is caused by a small bacterium. 1. Syphilis begins with the development of a CHANCRE sore (Painless reddish sore at site of infection).

  23. Syphilis 1. Syphilis progresses into three different stages. Stage 1 Chancre Stage 2 asymptomatic symptomatic Stage 3 latent stage. 2. If left untreated syphilis spreads throughout the body damaging internal organs, causing paralysis, convulsions, blindness, and heart disease. 3. Can be cured by Antibiotics

  27. HIV/AIDS Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome- a disease in which the immune system of the patient is weakened. 1. AIDS is the leading cause of death among the 25-44 year age group. • Human Immunodeficiency Virus- a virus that attacks the immune system.

  28. AIDS/HIV 1. HIV attacks the helper T-Cells 2. Helper T-Cells recognize any foreign pathogen in the body and alert the whole immune system. 3. Destruction of T-Cells systematically destroys the immune system. 4. Opportunistic Disease- infections that occur in individuals who do not have a healthy immune system. 5. HIV infection is progressive—1-12years.

  30. Stages of HIV/AIDS There are 3 Stages to HIV/AIDS Stage 1:Infectious Stage- immediately after contracting virus (3-6weeks): fever, rash headache, body aches, and swollen glands. Stage 2: Asymptomatic Stage- a period of time during which a person infected with HIV has no symptoms, 6-10 years. Stage 3: Symptomatic Stage- the stage in which a person infected with HIV has symptoms as a result of immune deficiency. AIDS begins, S@S include: swollen glands, weight loss, and yeast infections.

  31. Detecting HIV EIA- a test that screens of the HIV antibodies in the blood. A. Developing antibodies take 1 month to develop B. Certain health conditions mask antibodies. Western Blot- is the most common confirmation test for HIV. Treatments of HIV: $51,000 per month.

  32. HIV/AIDS statistics • HIV is resistance to the AIDS drug cocktail. • Pandemic- a global outbreak of infectious disease. • Infertility:is not being able to have kids. • 2002- 30 million people worldwide were infected with HIV
