  1. Multigenre Research Paper • Before you decide on your American, consider this: • Your research will address two central questions: 1) What does the American Dream mean to a prominent American figure and 2) What does it mean to me? The final task will be to draw conclusions about the similarities and differences between the prominent American’s dream and yours. • You will research various elements of the prominent American you have chosen to define the American Dream form his/her perspective. Choose wisely!

  2. Writing the Proposal 1.Choose your subject and think about your reader. Define and research your idea. Why this American? How can you convince your reader of your idea’s value? 2. Write your draft Beginning: Briefly introduce your idea and describe what your proposal will do. Middle: Provide convincing details to support your proposal. Why is this important? Is the idea workable? Include the following details: a. Materials and other resources needed b. Steps you will take and a schedule for completing them. How will you plan your time and writing throughout the project? This may be revised at a later time. c. Results expected-What do you expect to find out in your research? Or what do you think you will learn? End: Focus on the benefits of the project and ask for its approval.

  3. Proposal Revisions 3. Revising and Editing • Is your proposal detailed, specific and accurate? • Have you organized your points in an effective way? • Do you show that you care about the research? • Have you used headings, lists and white space? • Have you checked your spelling, punctuation, and usage?

  4. Sample Proposal Date: November 7, 2005 To: Mrs. Spencer From: Jessica Man Subject: My American Dream and Arthur Ashe Project Description: Although Arthur Ashe was the first African-American chosen to play on the American tennis team in 1963, tennis did not define his character. Through his fame as a tennis star, Arthur Ashe wanted to establish equality in sports and after his diagnosis of HIV, wanted to establish equality in health care with his organization, The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health. With this, I plan to study Ashe’s view of the American Dream and his search for racial equality in my multi-genre piece. I will further build upon my own perspective of the American Dream and its development throughout history. I will explore Ashe’s memoir and organizations and writings about him to complete my multi-genre paper. Similar to mine, Arthur Ashe’s American Dream began with an ambition to be someone great, his being to become a champion tennis player; however unlike me, Ashe’s dream became something more-an idea of using his fame to bring about change and equality. Resources Needed (MLA Format-this is not): 1. Arthur Ashe, Caroline EvensonLazo 2. Arthur Ashe, Weissberg 3. Days of Grace: a memoir, Arthur Ashe 4. IntoThe Wild, Jon Krakauer 5. Arthur Ashe website 6. Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health

I hope to broaden my views and gain a larger perspective about the American Dream through different figures in history. Through this I expect to create my own idea about the American Dream. Furthermore, this paper will encompass my skills and reveal my strengths and weaknesses about organization and research. Is this an acceptable topic of research?
