  1. Article: Enduratech.co.za White Picket Fences Through The Ages From the early days when humans finally learnt to live in groups and start civilizations, they have always been doing one thing in particular and that is, fencing the area surrounding them for safety from animals. Fences and gates were the best way to keep their area safe from animals as well marking their territory. Wood has always been the choice of materials when it comes to fencing as it could be found in abundance. These fences were made by posting wooden logs into the ground held together by horizontal shafts of wood.In the current times, people have been using fencing as more of a decorative accent to their property, rather than protection simply because of the civilized nature of the places we live in now. It is more of a protection from stray animals and a wall to keep our children and pets from wandering outside. One particular kind of fence has been popular for centuries now and is called the white picket fence. Picket fences are traditionally white in color – hence the name! Traditionally it was made out of wooden planks tapered around the tops and painted white. These wooden planks used to be burrowed into the ground keeping their tops usually at the same height or sometimes at different heights to make a pattern. These planks of wood were kept in line and intact with the help of a wooden shaft running horizontally from the posts at the ends of the fence. The posts are usually dug deep into the ground to provide sufficient stability to the fence. The planks of wood are called pickets and their tops are sometimes shaped as dog ears or otherwise shaped in a bit more rounded fashion. The height of the pickets is kept usually from thirty six inches to forty eight inches from ground. White picket fences have been popular for a long time now and are still used being a classic design that they portray. These were also used as pool fencing or even in the cricket fields as boundaries before the use of the advertising boards came into the place. The material of choice for the white picket fence have undergone changes though, in the recent times, because of the need to save trees. Hence, a more modern material has now become available in the market for the job - Polyvinyl chloride. This is the best replacement for wood as it offers more strength and durability to the fence. Wooden fences also require much more maintenance and care to keep them looking good all the time, which is not much of a problem with these new materials. There are many manufacturers available today that make white picket fences on order and include all the shipping charges as well in their base price.
