Assistive Technology is…… The use of any device or service to improve the learning of students who have an IEP and demonstrate a need for assistance in the general education classroom to meet their learning goals. ____________________________________________ Students may use assistive technologies to improve … • Communication skills • Completing academic assignments • Use for physical accommodations such as seating or walking, • Accessing materials needed for instruction. (Enhancements, 2010)

  3. Assistive Technology is… Made up of two components- 1. Assistive Devices 2. Assistive Services Is any group that provides: the assistive technology device to a qualifying candidate. Monitoring for the device. Training for the student, family, and/or, educators. Maintenance for the device. Evaluations for needs of technology devices. Assistive Devices are tools designed to improve the learning of students with disabilities. Some examples are… • Pencil grips • Raised Line Paper • Audio Books • Communication Devices • Keyboards (Enhancements, 2010)

  4. Laws Regarding Assistive Technology Assistive Technology must be provided by law to any student that is subject to a Free Appropriate Public Education in which the student qualifies for an IEP. Schools must be equipped to provide the supplemental services if required by the IEP. Federal Law requires that Assistive Technology to include devices and services to be successful. (Enhancements, 2010)

  5. Hearing Amplifiers Hearing Amplifiers help students hear better in small group or one on one settings. Hearing impaired Assistive Technology (Communications, 2014)

  6. Seeing Impaired Assistive Technology Large Print Books Students can use large print books to help visually understand the information presented to them. (Books, 2014)

  7. Highlighting Tape Highlighting tape can help students who struggle with learning disabilities, identify important information in a large amount of text. Learning Impaired Assistive Technology (Stuff, 2014)

  8. Physically Disabled Assistive Technology Pencil Grips Pencil Grips help with students who have weak motor skills. It allows students to better grip their pencils. (Needs, 2014)

  9. In Conclusion… • Students have a better chance of succeeding in a general education setting through the use of Assistive Technology. • Assistive Technology should include devices and services and meet each individual’s needs. • All services and devices should meet the standards set by Federal Law, and students with an IEP should be allowed the use of Assistive Technology in order to receive a FAPE.
