What is Web 2.0? “The term Web 2.0 is commonly associated with web applications that facilitate interactive information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design, and collaboration on the World Wide Web…” “The second generation of the World Wide Web, especially the movement away from static web pages to dynamic and sharable content and social networking.” “Web 2.0 is the popular term for advanced Internet technology and applications including blogs, wikis, RSS and social bookmarking..” “A term used to describe a new generation of Web services and applications with an increasing emphasis on human collaboration.” • Even though a precise definition of Web 2.0 may be difficult to pinpoint, the following key facts can be assimilated with this technological tool: • First introduced in 2004 by Dale Dougherty, a publisher at O’Reilly Media • Focused on creating a web environment with the following characteristics: • Using the web as a platform for various applications • Allowing users to access the web and effectively contribute to its development • Utilizing new methods to distribute technological information “Web 2.0 is an expression which was used for the first time in 2004 and referred to the second generation of Internet. The main characteristics of this new era in the Internet is connected with its constant development and delivering services tailored to the needs of each user..” “There is no set definition of Web 2.0, it generally refers to the use of the web as a more social platform where users participate by generating their own content alongside the content provided by the websites.” “Web 2.0 does not refer to any specific change in technology of the Internet, but rather the behavior of how people use the Internet…” “A mix of technology and business processes that facilitate conversational marketing.”

Using the web as a platform for various applications: • Provision of a service rather than a product, making it unnecessary for web users to purchase specific software to utilize 2.0 features • Web components are accessible via multiple platforms (Mac, PC, cell phone) • Seamless interaction between search engines and large databases of information • Focuses on positive user experiences and ease of navigation Web 2.0Characteristics • Allowing users to access the web and effectively contribute to its development: • Internet users are the primary facilitators of determining the content on the web and in what format it should appear • Users are encouraged to create individual accounts and log-ins to more efficiently interact with the content. • Web sites monitor user contributions and tailor the site accordingly • Prevalence of open source software (anyone can use the application code) and web tags (to aid in the utilization of search engines) • Utilizing new methods to distribute technological information: • Web sites are updated on a frequent basis due to the emergence of user-friendly web editing software • Increased popularity of blogs as a mechanism for communicating with a large number of web users on a regular basis • Improved web page navigation utilizing permalinks • Allowing additional components to be connected to the internet, including cell phones and iPods

  4. Web 2.0 Users The tools available through Web 2.0 continue to develop at a rapid pace, and everyone can take advantage of what this technological tool has to offer! The extent of available options can initially seem overwhelming; however, it just takes time to become familiar with how these applications can be used on a personal level, in the classroom setting, or in the professional business environment! A few examples have been highlighted of how Web 2.0 can be effectively utilized in a variety of environments; however, this list just touches the surface of available options! Web users are encouraged to explore and discover how Web 2.0 can be an invaluable resource! • If you are an educator, the following tools might be useful in the classroom: • Google Sketchup • Wordle • Photo Story 3 • Hot Potato • Crocodoc • Smilebox • If you are an entrepreneur, the following tools might be useful in the business environment: • Issuu • Calendar Hub • Yugma • Google docs • Zoho Creator • Carbonmade: Your online • portfolio • For all individuals, the following tools might be useful for everyday life: • Flickr • Switchboard • Caring.com • Weather Bug • Wikipedia • Bloomberg Businessweek

Caring.com“To Help the Helpers” • Who utilizes this tool? • Individuals who are in the position to care for aging parents, spouses, or other relatives/loves ones • Why is this tool so important? • Due to the large number of aging individuals in the baby boomer generation, it is estimated that more than 40 million people in the US are in a position to care for someone who is older than 50. These caregivers need a reliable resource to consult when dealing with many common care-giving issues. • What is the mission of Caring.com? • As noted on the website, the mission of this organization is “You’re there for them. We’re here for you”. This site is genuinely committed to assisting caregivers in the capacity of decision making, relieving stress, providing time & money saving hints, and facilitating a community of individuals who are facing similar situations.

  7. This particular Web 2.0 tool is very user-friendly, and the web site is easy to navigate. Some of the features listed below are just a few examples of why this resource is so valuable for any individual who is in the capacity to care for a loved one: • Four main interactive tabs (Care-giving, Health, Senior Living, Just for You) which further provide a wealth of resources and additional links to other sites • Option to customize a care-giving plan based on the individual who is receiving the care • An opportunity to establish a personal account and further customize needs in accordance with the care-giving situation • Links to blogs, forums, and Q&A panels to link care givers with other individuals who are facing similar situations • A search engine within Caring.com to further facilitate the process of finding the desired information • An expansive directory listing hundreds of locations for assisted living, in-home care, and nursing homes • Simply visit the interactive website at www.caring.com to take advantage of all this resource has to offer! Photo Story 3 “Make Show-N-Tell Cool Again” • How can this tool be implemented in the academic environment? • Student will have the opportunity to utilize this program to create interactive presentations by combining photos, music, and personal narration in an organized manner. The nature of this program can be incorporated into any curriculum where students are assigned the task of researching a topic and then presenting it to the class or sharing it electronically! • What abilities will students gain by using this program? • Students who become proficient in utilizing Photo Story 3 have the potential to improve their skill set in the areas of photo editing, presentation management, verbal communication, as well as collecting and consolidating volumes of multi-media data. • What are some added benefits of using Photo Story 3 in the classroom? • In addition to being a free software, students can also share their presentations with others via e-mail attachment, as the file sizes are relatively small. Photo Story also offers students the chance to manipulate photos, add special effects, and use their voice for a narrative, all with a minimal amount of teacher instruction. This is an excellent tool for students to conduct some self-exploration and develop their creativity!

Once this software program is properly installed, students should consider the following steps when building their presentation: • Determine an appropriate topic for a presentation, and then save all of the necessary pictures, songs, and text files in a separate folder. • Open the Photo Story 3 software, and choose the option for Begin a New Story. [Once a story has been started, students will select the option to Edit a project or Play a story.] • After the option to Begin a New Story is selected, students will begin by importing all of their selected photos. Once photos are imported, students will have the chance to edit and re-arrange them on an individual basis in accordance with the presentation. • Once all photos have been properly edited, students can add text, verbal narration, and/or music to various photos to make the presentation even more informative and interactive! • After students have finished their Photo Story 3 project (or just finished for the day), they will save their work, and then have the opportunity to easily return to make additional changes or present the final presentation as a Windows Media File! Issuu “Publish by Millions” • What is Issuu? • Issuu is an efficient tool which takes a variety of documents, consolidates them into a professional on-line publication, and then provides the option to share the finished product on the Internet! • When would a business utilize this tool? • When businesses are working with clients, vendors, customers, or employees, an entire publication containing reports, graphs, charts, etc., can be easily transferred to multiple business contacts in a highly efficient manner. • Employers could also request prospective employees to upload their professional documents to create a personal portfolio (resume, cover letter, references, etc.) to submit during the hiring process. Reviewing the necessary documents on-line prior to setting up interviews would be particularly effective if members management were not located in the same vicinity. • Once a publication has been created, businesses are able to include this document on their company website, further providing the option to share company information, statistics, etc. with all those who utilize the world wide web!
