OCEANUS • Father: Uranus • Mother: Gaea • Wife: Tethys • Children: Oceanid Nymphs, 3000 rivers, Seas • A serpent-like being that encircles the Earth. • Replaced by the god Poseidon came to power as the god of the oceans, rivers, and water. • He was the only titan that was not against Zeus in the war.

  4. PONTUS • Name meaning the “deep sea” • Personification of the sea • Son of Gaia • Father of Nereus

  5. NEREUS • God of the Mediterranean Sea • Son of Gaia and Pontus • Father of the friendly sea nymphs called Nereids • A gentle and wise old man with a power to foretell the future • Saviour of ships

  6. TRITON • Sun of Poseidon • The trumpeter of the Sea • He rides the waves on horses and sea monsters • When he blew the shell trumpet violently the waves would be stirred up. Gentle blowing would calm the waves • Body of a man with the tail of a fish

  7. THE NAIADS • Fresh water nymphs • Dwelt in brooks, rivers, springs, fountains, lakes, ponds and wells • The body of water dwelt by a nymph was thought to have inspirational, medicinal or prophetic powers • Love affairs with gods and mortals
