  5. Social Contract Individuals give up freedom in exchange for protection from governments.

  6. Natural Rights Rights that can not be taken away. • Life, Liberty, and Property

  7. Separation of Powers The power of government is split into three separate branches • Legislative: Creates the law • Executive: Enforces the law • Judicial: interprets the law

  8. Checks and Balances Prevent one branch of government from dominating others.

  9. Coup d’etat Military take over of a government.
