  2. Why Take Notes? • If you do not write anything down… • 40% of the information will be forgotten after 20 minutes • 75% will be forgotten after 1 week • You have 18 weeks until your semester exam!!!

  3. What Not To Do • Dictation (copying verbatim) is the LEAST effective way to take notes • Not engaged in learning • Only recording, not thinking or analyzing • Missing what teacher is saying • Chance of not writing it all down in time

  4. Note Taking Rules • Use key words & phrases • Use reminder-symbols & abbreviations • ! ? * • Summarize the information

Example • There are three key things that can help to make and keep our environment green. • The first is to educate the public on the environmental problems we are facing and what they can do to help. • Secondly, improving technology can really make a difference. Inventors and Environmentalists are constantly working together to create new products and new technologies that leave less of a footprint on the planet. • A third thing that can help keep our environment green is to increase the demand for recycling. If everyone were required to recycle, it would significantly reduce the amount of trash that litters highways and landfills.

  9. Example • There are many factors that influence our environment. Some are positive influences, and others are negative. • Some of the positive influences we see impacting our environment include an awareness by the public of the problems we face and a willingness to recycle. Also, many people are now opting to carpool or use public transportation which also positively impacts our planet. Furthermore, many people are choosing to purchase green chemicals that are safer and less damaging our air and water. • However, there are also some negative influences that are harming our environment. Chemicals and waste are the two biggest culprits of environmental deterioration, followed closely by exhaust from automobiles. Also, a depletion of our resources is a major concern and another negative impact on the environment.
