  2. What is the goal ofgraphic design? To create a visual solution to a communication problem

  3. Why is agraphic designer hired? Usually to design a specific piece of commercial art: • Brochure • Logo • Advertisement • Packaging

  4. Why hired? Purpose is to promote a product or service: • Goal driven • Purposeful • Clear outcome • Pleasing to client and audience • Budget and deadline achieved

  5. Assume Don’t assume you know what your client wants or needs: • Ask them • Understand what they like • What are they looking for • What does their audience like • Do they have a vision

  6. First Steps Brainwork: Research what you need to know: • Problem • Target audience • Client • Competition • Materials • Media • Specifications • Budget • Deadlines

  7. Step Two Decide on a plan: • Timeline: How long are you going to budget for each part of the job • Media: What is the best solution – software, art, printing, mock-ups, and presentation. • Thumbnails: Do not wait for creativity, start sketching out ideas, get the basics down – fine tune later.

  8. Step Three Creativity: Resulting from originality of thought or expression • Inspiration • Motivation • Frustration • Intuition • Curiosity

  9. Creativity • Be curious • Be open-minded • Be purposeful • Look for inspiration • Think improbable thoughts • Don’t always be serious • Make puns • Use metaphors • Do not discard any ideas • Generate many answers – more the better • Combine ideas

  10. Inspiration Be outrageous and unusual when needed • Stand on your head • Dance with your cat • Play opera music • Jump rope

  11. Swipe File • Inspiration file, Sourcebook, Idea folder • Fuel your creativity • Collections • You can do it better

  12. Assignment • Create your own inspiration file • You must file your file with multiple types (mediums) of items that inspire you • You must be able to express what made you choose the items • You must have at least two items that you think you could have designed better. • BONUS: Create a Typography File
