  2. Who are we? • AEC: European association of more than 240 professional music training institutions • Aims to promote European cooperation and to address European issues • Projects in SOCRATES, ERASMUS MUNDUS, EU/USA, eCONTENT, CULTURE 2000, LEONARDO programmes • Main office in Utrecht (NL)

  3. Background • Changes in the music profession • Importance of recognition of qualifications is increasing • Important to keep the initiative: special characteristics must be taken into account

  4. Characteristics of music education • Individual character: 1-to-1 teaching • LLL character of music: certain entrance level to HE required • Broad range of skills takes time to develop • Relationship to research (3rd cycle!)

  5. What have we done? • Dublin/Polifonia descriptors • Learning outcomes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles in music study

  6. Polifonia/Dublin Descriptors • Polifonia ‘Tuning’ and 3rd cycle working groups start 2005 to develop PDD • Aim: Orientation for the further development of the music sector learning outcomes

  7. [1] Shared ‘Dublin’ descriptors for Short Cycle, First Cycle, Second Cycle and Third Cycle Awards, previously referred to as bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral awards. [2] Alternative title as proposed by the Joint Quality Initiative Meeting, in Dublin, on 23 March 2004 [3] Defined in Glossary 1.

  9. AEC Learning Outcomes • Start formulation 2002 for project ‘Effects of the Bologna Declaration on Professional Music Training in Europe’ • In continuous review process since 2004 • Initially 2 cycles, in Polifonia 3rd cycle included • Integrated in ‘Tuning’ template

  10. What will we do next? (I) In the ERASMUS TN for Music ‘Polifonia’: • Dissemination throughout the sector • Validation by the profession • Compatibility with EQF • Links to pre-higher education levels in music • 3rd cycle • Publish handbooks on role of learning outcomes in credit point systems, curriculum development and internal quality assurance in music study

  11. What will we do next? (II) In the AEC project ‘Accreditation in European Professional Music Training’: • Development of subject specific criteria and procedure for national procedures and review programme at European level • DPPs and Learning Outcomes being used in this process

  12. What will we do next? (III) AEC ERASMUS MUNDUS project ‘Mundus Musicalis’: • International comparability through collection of information on learning/programme outcomes and quality assurance in US, Canada, Korea, Japan, Australia, Brazil and Argentina
