  2. Watts – kilowatts – kWh A Watt is a measure of the electric energy a item uses or creates A kilowatt is 1000 Watts (kilo = 1000) The energy your house uses a month is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). You pay the electrical company for every kWh you use.

  3. Smart Meters As of 2010 all homes in Ontario have Smart Meters which not only measure how much energy your house uses, but also exactly when you used it. This is because you pay less for electricity at non-peak hours – this is to encourage you to use less electricity at peak times. See figure 4.40 on p 317 Why do you think electricity costs less at certain times?

  4. Ener-Guide Labels The Government of Canada has set up regulations that require companies to label electrical appliances to show how much energy they will use. These labels are called Ener-Guide Labels. Sometimes more energy efficient appliances are more expensive to buy; why would someone want to pay more for an appliance?

  5. ENERGY STAR Labels Makes it easier to find the most efficient appliances. Any appliance that exceeds the governments standards for electrical efficiency is given an ENERGY STAR label.
