  2. Bottom’s Dream • Circle every use of the pronouns I and me • Search for the two nouns most repeated and underline them

  3. Character Discussion Introduction • Bottom appears as a blowhard, a bully, and a fool, yet the other workmen genuinely admire him…. • What makes him a sympathetic character?

  4. As a class…

  5. Nick Bottom Character Study

  6. Character Traits • List 3 to 5 character traits • With a partner: • Find the scenes where Bottom appears. Look in each scene for examples and/or lines that prove each of the three character traits. (Make sure to take careful notes!)

  7. Objectives • What does he want? • Does this change in the course of the play? • Make a list of his objectives. • Find an example and/or line to prove each one.

  8. Style • How does Bottom talk? Verse or prose? • If verse – what form? (Tetrameter? Pentameter? Etc.) • Is he consistent, or does he change verse forms in certain situations? (Make note of your conclusions) • In what style does he talk – simple, fancy, or what? • Write down a line that is a good example.

  9. For homework tonight… • Bottom is stubborn, bossy, and vain, but he is valued by his friends. Describe the “Bottom” in your life. Draw specific parallels between the person you know and Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. • If you’d like to type this, I will certainly not stop you, but it does not NEED to be typed.

  10. Grab a piece of paper and get into your Acting Companies. *Directors for today, pick up your company’s folder. Once you’re there, decide who’s a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5…(I’ll tell you why in a minute…)

  11. Directors: Lead a 5-minute discussion on the following questions with your Acting Company and compile the findings on a piece of paper to turn in. • What did each person or pair come up with? • What kind of person is Bottom? • What Hollywood actor (besides the one you’ve seen play him in the film we’ve watched) do you think would do a good job playing Bottom?
