  1. IT Planning and Managment Lecture 11: Big-Bang ERP Implementation at a Global Company Part 2: SETTING THE STAGE Collage of Information Technology University of Palestine, Gaza Prepared by: Mahmoud Rafeek Alfarra

  2. قال أحد السلف الصالح: مساكين أهل الدنيا ... غادروها و لم يذوقوا ألذ ما فيها قيل : و ما هو ألذ ما فيها؟ قال: ذكر الله

  3. Outlines • SETTING THE STAGE • Y2K Problem and DSW • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) • CASE DESCRIPTION (introduction) • Students’ activities • System Request • Problems from VCR

  4. SETTING THE STAGE • Information Systems (IS) at DSW were custom developed specifically for DSW since the early 1970s, when the IS unit consisted of an IS manager, six data-entry clerks, three operators, and four programmers. • The first functions to be automated, in batch mode, were accounting, costing, and budgeting.

  5. SETTING THE STAGE • Upgrading … • The IBM 4331 mainframe computer • An IBM 4341 and a 4341-31 • Hierarchical DataBase Management System (DBMS)

  6. SETTING THE STAGE • With a DBMS in place: • DSW recruited a number of systems analysts • Expanded its IS group to include ten programmers • Adopting a systems approach and building integrated systems that replaced fragmented ones.

  7. DSW Structure Additional Changes Made additional Changes 

  8. Y2K Problem • By 1995 the DSW as for many other firms was well aware of the seriousness of the Year 2000 (Y2K) problem . • Resolution of the Y2K problem was critical to survival • Decision Making Leading to ERP Implementation solution

  9. Enterprise Resource Planning • The scope of this case study is focused on a big-bang implementation of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system at DSW. • There are many different systems in a large company's "back office," including planning, manufacturing, distribution, shipping, and accounting.

  10. Enterprise Resource Planning • ERPis a system that integrates all of these functions into a single system, designed to serve the needs of each different department within the enterprise. • Usually ERP systems will have many components including hardware and software, in order to achieve integration. • Most ERP systems use a unified database to store data for various functions found throughout the organization.

  11. CASE DESCRIPTION • The Vice President of Information Systems (VPIS) thus began to seriously consider avoiding Y2K conversion altogether . • At the same time, shifting from a “make” strategy to a “buy” strategy
