Sins of the Tongue • Sins of the Tongue refer to any sins done with speaking; in the New Testament the Greek word “glossa” is translated tongue which means “language” • We must watch what our type of language is when we speak • We also must watch what our tone is when we speak as we learn more from the tone of what someone says that sometimes the actual words • Of course body language tells us even more than the words when we speak • The sin can be what we say, how we say it and what we are thinking when we say it

Sins with the Tongue • Gossip – “Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaks deceit: one speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in heart he lays his wait” (Jer. 9:8) • Lying/backbiting – “Lying lips are abomination to the Lord” (Pro. 12:22a) • Slander – “He that utters a slander is a fool (Pro. 10:18b) • Complaining, whining, griping, such as the Israelites in the wilderness with Moses (Exodus) • Flattery – “He that goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets: therefore do not meddle with him that flatters with his lips” (Pro. 22:18)

Sins with the Tongue • Disrespect for people in authority – Jesus said when shown a Roman coin, “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God what is God’s” • Foul language – “Better is the poor who walks in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips and is a fool (Pro. 20:15) • Malice/bitterness/hatred – can be spoken but comes from a wicked heart or negative mental attitude – “He that hides hatred with lying lips is a fool (Pro. 10:18a)

Bible Stories about the Tongue • Look at what Job’s friends wanted him to do – to curse God (with his tongue) and die, and yet Job never cursed God although he certainly questioned God, later receiving a major answer from God in the form of many questions; Job said, “My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit” (Job 27:4); Eliju the younger and wiser of his friends, said, “My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly” (Job 33:3)

Moses was concerned about not being able to speak, even after being trained for 40 years in Pharaoh's courts; later Aaron became the speaker and the High Priest but not one always of good character. • Isaiah said he was a man of unclean lips (Isaiah 6:5); a seraphim came and touched his lips with a coal from the altar; then Isaiah said “Here am I, send me.” • Zachariah couldn’t speak because he didn’t have faith • Jesus healed the deaf and dumb in His many miracles and can heal us spiritually, as well as teach us when to speak and how to speak

Sins with the Tongue • People sometimes continue in the negative cycle of where they think evil, wrote evil, speak evil and then do evil – look at what happened with the mass murderer at Virginia Tech and how he thought evil, wrote evil (plays), spoke evil (tapes), and then did evil (murders) • Others have started with speaking evil and then doing evil • You can stop negativity and even more sins by reining in your tongue and not speaking, just like the picture of the bridled horse where the bridle and bit in the mouth helps direct the path of travel for the horse

  22. Process of Sinning with the Tongue • A wrong thought comes into the mind/brain • An emotional response comes from the wrong thought • The decision of the human will is made to speak not considering God’s will • The tongue is used to speak evil instead of good • The words that are evil and/or negative can have a negative impact on the mind/brain which continues the negative cycle • People sometimes continue in the negative cycle

Glorifying God with Our Words • Use our tongues and words for praising God; “O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall show forth thy praise (Psa. 51:15) • Use your tongue only to say that which is good and loving – let your answers be “yes and no”; do not swear by anything in heaven or in earth • Use your tongue to thank God for everything and in everything • Refrain from speaking if not in love and kindness (Love suffers long and is kind (1 Cor. 13:4); “Keep you tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile” (Psa. 34:13)
