OVERVIEW • Motivation: • Measure employer satisfaction level with regard to skills • Understand what kind of skills are demanded • Identify gaps in skills demanded by industries • Provide information to engineering inst’s with regard to skills demand • Focus on skills/learning outcomes and employer satisfaction • Survey Methods: • Tool: On-line Survey (September– October, 2009) • Sample Size: 150 companies across regions and sectors • Questions: Level of importance and satisfaction in skills of engineering graduates

  3. Top 3 Important Skills General Skills Specific Skills Integrity Reliability Teamwork Entrepreneurship Communication in English Modern tools, equipment, and technologies

  4. Importance and Satisfaction Level64 % of employers are “somewhat“, "not very” or “not at all” satisfied with the quality of the graduates

  5. Top 3 Skill Gaps General Skills Specific Skills • Reliability • Self-motivated • Willingness to Learn • Problem-solving • Design and conduct experiments and data analysis • Reading

  6. Different sectors need different skills. For instance… (excluding entrepreneurship) Top 3 important skills in IT are : Advanced computer Communication in English Data analysis Whereas… Top 3 important skills in Infra are: Knowledge of math/sci/engg Ability to use modern tools Problem solving in engineering The least important skills are also quite different Important Skills by Sector

  7. How can we increase employabilityengineering graduates? • Focus on graduates’ skills • Measure learning outcomes • Ensure that learning outcomes and skills are demanded by industries • Customize courses to meet different demands • Interact more with industries
