  1. The Department of Sport and Exercise Science Dr Mark Burnley

  2. Research groups • Research conducted by two multidisciplinary groups • Human Exercise Performance • Aim: to examine those factors which directly or indirectly influence sport and exercise performance, in both individual athletes or in a group/team context • Physical Activity in Ageing, Rehabilitation and Health • Aim: to determine the effect of physical activity on physiological, psychological and quality of life measures, and so determine activity strategies to optimise health and rehabilitation benefits • The two groups are not mutually exclusive and staff often perform investigations in both contexts

  3. Infrastructure and environment • Carwyn James building contains an array of physiological, psychological and biomechanical instruments • Cardiorespiratory physiology: on-line and offline respiratory gas analysers, 12-lead, 3-lead ECG and heart rate monitoring, manual and computerised spirometry • Anthropometry: DXA scanner and underwater weighing tank • Muscle function: Biodex dynamometer, muscle stimulator, EMG (inc. Telemetry) • Biochemistry: variety of analysers for body fluids (not just human!), –80 freezers and portable sample storage • Environmental chamber , skin and core temperature sensors

  4. My research • The kinetics of pulmonary O2 uptake • The exercise intensity spectrum • The critical power concept and exercise tolerance • Mechanisms of neuromuscular fatigue • Of use in setting and interpreting any research protocol

  5. SES and IBERS: working together • For us: • Broad research experience and culture in IBERS • Analytical techniques/research methods beyond SES capabilities • Assistance in producing future grant success • For you: • Expertise in working with human participants in all conceivable contexts • Imposition of accurate and physiologically meaningful exercise stress • Added value in funding bids
