  3. How is the Caldecott Award Chosen? • Must be published in English in the United States • Must be a citizen or resident of the United States. • Must be published the previous year. • Chosen by a committee

  4. The History • Started in 1937 by Frederic G. Melcher. • Named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph J. Caldecott. • The first winner was Animals of the Bible, A Picture Book, illustrated by Dorothy P. Lathrop in 1938.
