  1. Fermilab and the CMS Author List Patricia McBride Fermilab PAC meeting October 16, 2012

  2. CMS Author List • Each institution has service and financial obligations based on the number of authors from the institute. • The financial (and service) obligations of each Institution are determined each year, based on the membership of the Institution shortly before the meeting of the Fall RRB. • Service obligations are counted by institute. New authors have particular responsibilities.

  3. 5. A short history of the Fermilab Author list • ~76 Fermilab authors on 2010 papers • 7 have retired and remain active  still on the author list • 1 deceased • 13 left the laboratory (either retired or moved to new positions at other institutions – includes 4 RAs and 1 WF) • 4 moved to the Intensity Frontier or other lab positions • 8 have been removed from the author list for 2012 or 2013 • Salary 100% paid by US CMS operations program, or • Significant responsibilities in other areas at the laboratory • 1 special case (authorship exception granted by CMS) • 42 remain on the author list

  6. Higgs paper • Fermilab added about 60 people to our usual author list for the July observation paper. • Physicists with significant contributions in operations • Tier-1 team • Offline and Computing Development team • Engineers active in CMS since commissioning period • Deceased members of the CMS group • Physicists - formerly part of the CMS group Result - Doubled the size of the Fermilab author list and was much appreciated by the staff.

  7. Issues and implications • Morale issues – many experts with PhDs in particle physics are not on the author list because they are supported by the operations program. Will we be able to continue to attract people to these positions? • This situation will intensify if we need to move more people to operations or project funds. It is not yet clear how this will work for the upgrade project. • There are many CMS and US CMS L1 and L2 managers in the Fermilab group – in computing, offline, upgrade, HCAL, etc. Will these managers be able to remain as authors? • The annual review of the author list raises the bar for CMS authorship for the scientific staff.

  8. 2013 author list (M & O A) • M. Albrow, J. Anderson, L.A.T. Bauerdick, J. Berryhill, P.C. Bhat, K. Burkett, J.N. Butler, V. Chetluru, H.W.K. Cheung, F. Chlebana, V.D. Elvira, I. Fisk, J. Freeman, Y. Gao, E. Gottschalk,O. Gutsche, D. Hare, R.M. Harris, J. Hirschauer, B. Hooberman, S. Jindariani, U. Joshi, B. Klima, S. Kwan, J. Linacre, D. Lincoln, R. Lipton, T. Liu,J. Lykken, K. Maeshima, V. Martinez Outshoorn, S. Maruyama, D. Mason, P. McBride, K. Mishra, S. Mrenna, C. Newman-Holmes, V. O'Dell, O. Prokofyev, R. Roser, E. Sexton-Kennedy, S. Sharma, W.J. Spalding, L. Spiegel, S. Tkaczyk, N.V. Tran, L. Uplegger, R. Vidal, M. Verzocchi, J. Whitmore, F. Yan Research Associates < 1 year in CMS

  9. Authorship in 2013 Fermilab Author list - 52 scientists and RAs for 2013 + active retired/emeritus scientists • In reaction to the US change in policy regarding M&O A payments, the CMS Collaboration Board has discussed allowing each institute to add a very small number of additional authors to each paper. • It is not clear if this proposal is gaining any traction within the collaboration since there has been only a small change in the fraction of US authors within CMS.
